Ethan Carter's Arrest
Ethan Carter had always thought of himself as the responsible one. As treasurer of his college fraternity, he was meticulous with spreadsheets, receipts, and budgets. If something needed to be paid for, everyone assumed Ethan had already taken care of it. He liked the feeling of being dependable.
As preparations for the fraternity's largest spring social event got underway, Ethan volunteered to purchase the alcohol. He knew that many of the people who would attend were under the legal drinking age, but he convinced himself that it was no different from countless other parties. He rationalized that he was simply doing what previous officers had done and that nothing would happen.
He was wrong.
Late that evening, neighbors reported loud music, overcrowding, and suspected underage drinking. Police officers arrived and began interviewing attendees. As the investigation unfolded, officers collected receipts, reviewed payment records, and identified Ethan as the person who had authorized and made the alcohol purchases.
A few days later, officers arrived with an arrest warrant.
When the knock came at the door, Ethan's stomach tightened. He had spent the previous nights convincing himself that the investigation would amount to nothing. Instead, he found himself standing face-to-face with uniformed officers who calmly explained the warrant and asked him to turn around.
The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed in his mind.
Until that moment, everything had felt theoreticalβa legal issue, a meeting with an attorney, paperwork to sort through. The instant the cuffs locked around his wrists, it became unmistakably real.
Students gathered nearby watched quietly as he was escorted toward the patrol car. Some recognized him immediately. Others lifted their phones to record. Ethan kept his eyes fixed on the ground, wishing the short walk would somehow end before anyone else noticed.
One thought kept replaying in his head, despite everything else happening around him.
"This morning I was worried about matching my outfit."
He looked down briefly at the soft tan UGG slippers he had slipped on before answering the door. They were comfortable, expensive, and something he had barely thought about when he bought them. Hours earlier they had been part of an ordinary college day.
Now they seemed strangely out of place.
At the county jail, deputies inventoried his belongings one item at a time. His wallet disappeared into a property envelope. His watch followed. His phone was powered off and sealed away. Finally, he was instructed to remove his slippers.
The comfortable footwear that had seemed so ordinary that morning joined the rest of his possessions in storage.
Moments later, after changing into a standard orange jail uniform, he was issued a pair of hard plastic jail shoes.
He stared at them for a second before putting them on.
They were stiff, utilitarian, and identical to everyone else's. They weren't designed for comfort or style; they were simply institutional footwear intended for daily use inside the facility.
The change struck him more than he expected.
It wasn't really about the shoes.
It was about what they represented.
Every personal choice he had made that morningβwhat to wear, what shoes to put on, whether to grab his keys or check his phoneβhad vanished within a few hours. His clothes were gone. His belongings were stored in property bags. Even his reflection looked unfamiliar in the orange uniform.
As part of the booking process, Ethan was photographed from the front and the side.
He tried to look composed, but his expression betrayed the exhaustion and disbelief he felt. The booking photos took only a few seconds, yet he couldn't shake the feeling that those images might follow him for years.
He wondered who would eventually see them.
His parents?
His fraternity brothers?
Future employers?
The thought lingered long after the camera flash was over.
By the next day, rumors had already begun circulating on campus. Students exchanged screenshots and speculation online, mixing confirmed facts with exaggerations. Ethan imagined classmates recognizing his booking photograph before they remembered anything else about him. Whether the image actually spread widely or not, the possibility weighed heavily on him as he sat in the housing unit with little else to think about.
His initial court appearance took place late on a Friday afternoon.
His attorney requested that he be released pending further proceedings, emphasizing that Ethan had no criminal record, had cooperated with investigators, and posed no apparent flight risk.
The judge, however, determined that he would remain in custody until the next regularly scheduled bail review after the weekend, citing procedural scheduling and the need for additional information. Ethan listened quietly as the decision was announced.
The realization did not hit him immediately.
Then it did.
He wasn't going home.
As deputies escorted him back through the secure hallway, he understood that he would be spending the entire weekend in the county jail.
Friday evening stretched into Saturday.
Saturday became Sunday.
Time seemed strangely elastic. Without his phone, watch, or familiar routine, hours blurred together. Meals arrived at fixed times. Head counts interrupted the day. The fluorescent lights and constant background noise made it difficult to tell one part of the day from another.
He thought often about the contrast between the life he had expected to be living that weekend and the one he was experiencing instead.
Only days earlier he had been planning social events, balancing fraternity accounts, and thinking about classes. Now he measured time by meal trays, announcements over the intercom, and the sounds of heavy doors opening and closing.
The orange uniform and institutional shoes, which had seemed so foreign on Friday, already felt like part of an unwelcome routine.
Most of all, Ethan had time to think.
He replayed every decision that had led him there.
The receipt.
The party.
The assumption that someone else would be responsible.
The belief that "everyone does it."
Each memory felt obvious in hindsight.
When Monday finally arrived, deputies once again escorted him to court in jail attire and the standard restraints used for in-custody defendants. He felt the weight of every step into the courtroom, aware that the weekend had changed him. Even though he still hoped to resolve the case favorably, he no longer viewed the situation as a distant legal problem.
His attorney again argued for his release, while prosecutors described the allegations and the ongoing investigation. Ethan listened quietly, recognizing that whatever the ultimate outcome of the case, the experience of arrest, booking, and an unexpected weekend in custody had already left a lasting impression.
The university later opened its own disciplinary investigation, and the fraternity suspended him from his leadership position pending the outcome of the case. Friends who had once called him the reliable one now struggled to know what to say.
Looking back, Ethan realized that the most significant transition of that weekend wasn't from comfortable slippers to institutional shoes. It was the abrupt shift from believing he was simply organizing another social event to confronting the reality that decisions involving alcohol and underage drinking could carry serious legal consequences and affect every aspect of his life.
It was a lesson he wished he had learned before hearing the click of handcuffs.
This is a fictional story. Court procedures, bail decisions, and booking-photo publication practices vary by jurisdiction, and the events described are not intended to represent any specific legal system or real case.
What is the standard uniform in F22? Can we request to be in orange?
The standard uniform issued at intake is a green and white striped uniform (scrubs or jumpsuit).
We also issue yellow uniforms (scrubs or jumpsuit) to inmates who request and are housed in our Work Release Dormitory. Work "release" is a misnomer because you work for us and do not get released!
We do have a sizable inventory of orange uniforms (scrubs or jumpsuits). They are often used after showers or during periods of heavy laundry work when the original uniforms are being washed.
Haiden Deegan, Florida
I still remember the headlights before I saw the road again.
One second, I was driving my pickup through the back roads of rural West Virginiaβwindows cracked, country music low, boots resting heavy on the pedals. The next, red and blue lights were flashing in my mirror like something out of a nightmare that didnβt feel like it belonged to me.
My name is Chase. Iβm 21. Before that night, Iβd never even had a speeding ticket.
I pulled over on the shoulder, gravel crunching under my tires. My hands were steady at first, then not so steady when the officer walked up. When the officer came up to my window, he looked youngβclose enough in age that it almost made it worse. Not angry. Justβ¦ done with this kind of night.
βBeen drinking tonight?β he asked.
I remember laughing once, like it was a joke that would fix itself if I treated it lightly. It didnβt. The field test felt humiliating in a way I couldnβt explain yetβI just knew I was failing something I couldnβt undo in real time.
When he told me to turn around, I remember thinking Iβd be back in my truck in a few minutes. I wasnβt.
After he told me to put my hands behind my back, everything got quiet. The cold metal of the cuffs snapped shut, and suddenly I wasnβt just a guy in jeans and cowboy boots anymore. I was a case.
The ride to the station was silent except for the hum of the road. No sirens this time. Just inevitability.Β My wrists began to hurt as the cuffs dug into my wrists.Β
Intake was fluorescent lights and paperwork that made everything feel official in a way that didnβt leave room for denial. They took everything that felt like mineβboots, belt, shirt, walletβand replaced it with fingerprints, photo, and numbers instead of a name.Β My identity stripped away, piece by piece.
Then came the uniform. They gave me a standard-issue jail outfit: a well-worn orange jumpsuit made of rough, scratchy fabric that didnβt breathe right, the kind that clung where it shouldnβt and hung loose everywhere else. It had a broken-in collar that wouldnβt sit flat and a pocket with a large hole rendering it useless. My name wasnβt on itβjust βINMATEβ screen printed on the leg and back, like Iβd been turned into inventory.
The fabric smelled faintly of industrial detergent, sharp and unfamiliar, like it had been washed a hundred times but never really cleaned of what it had seen.
Even my Ariat boots were gone by thenβreplaced with thin socks on a cold concrete floor that made everything feel temporary and exposed. Β I remember standing there in socks, realizing how fast you can go from βnormal lifeβ to βprocessed.β
While the jail uniform was rough, stiff, and unfamiliar, the jail shoes were worse.
Thin, flat-soled sandals, made of cheap foam, almost like something youβd wear if you had nothing to say about your own life anymore. No laces. No structure. No weight to them at all. I remember sliding my feet into them and immediately feeling wrongβlike I was standing on something temporary, something that wasnβt meant to support a real person going anywhere real.
I kept thinking about my cowboy boots.
Those boots had weight. They were mine. Scuffed leather, solid soles, built for dirt roads, truck pedals, and long days where you felt every step you took. They made you feel grounded, like wherever you stood, you belonged thereβeven if you didnβt.
The jail shoes were the opposite. Quiet. Disposable. They didnβt grip the floor so much as accept it. Every step in them felt like I was borrowing time I didnβt control.
And then there were the leg irons.
I didnβt understand what that meant until they bent me slightly forward and fastened the chain around my ankles. The cuffs sat just above my bootsβwell, the shoes nowβand a short metal chain linked them together. It changed everything about how I moved. My steps werenβt mine anymore. They were measured, shortened, controlled.Β When I moved, it rustled loudly in the quiet hallway, every step announcing me in a way I didnβt want.
Walking felt wrong in a way I couldnβt fully explain. Not just restrictedβredefined. Even standing still, I was aware of them, the faint weight at my ankles reminding me that movement wasnβt something I decided on my own anymore. It was something that had to be permitted, step by step.
Court came later.Β Same jumpsuit, now wrinkled from sitting too long. Wrist restraints, waist chain, and the leg irons working together made every motion deliberate. Walking into the courthouse wasnβt walkingβ it felt mechanical, like I was being guided by something outside of me.
I remember thinking about how different it all was from just a few days before. From boots on gas pedals to soft jail shoes and chained steps across polished courthouse floors.
I didnβt look at anyone for long, but I felt everything: the clerk calling my name, the judgeβs voice, the weight of words like βDUIβ and βlicense suspensionβ landing like stones.
When my name was called, it didnβt feel like mine anymore. It felt like something assigned.
When I finally spoke, my voice sounded smaller than I expected.
βYes, Your Honor.β
That was it. No dramatic ending. No sudden fix. Just the moment I realized my life could still move forward, but not the way it had been moving before.
There was no dramatic ending. No clean break. Just the slow, unavoidable realization that the same life that once felt wide open in cowboy boots had narrowed into careful steps in leg ironsβand that nothing about it was going to reset just because I wanted it to.
On the way back to the county jail, the cuffs were still there. The difference was, now I understood why.
