🤔🤔 I had the super amazing opportunity to interpret when Hillary Clinton came to speak at a rally in Birmingham earlier this year. That moment was amazing and I was honored to be apart of this historical experience. ...and to think, I almost said no because I felt like I wasn't qualified! So what I learned is.... You've got to constantly talk yourself out of having that imposter syndrome. It'll have you thinking that just because there may be interpreters out there that have like 10 different certifications that you're not good enough. You CAN do it. Sometimes you just have to JUMP. It's simple. Just do it! Even when you're afraid. Even if you mess up. Even if people say you shouldn't be an interpreter because of your skin color. Just. Do. It. Child of a deaf adult (CODA) growing up: Ohhh you sign soooo good. You should become an Interpeter. You're gonna make your parents soooooo proud! CODA all grown up: No! You should NOT be an Interpeter! You should not be teaching ASL. You know too much slang. You sign just like a Deaf person and not an Interpeter. 😒 Then on top of all of that. I'm black. 👩🏾 I have two "strikes" against me in this 🌎 of interpreting. Why am I saying this? Because people have had the nerve to tell me to stop doing what I'm doing. People have told me that because I am black, I probably won't make it in Alabama. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do anything. If you have the passion and desire for something, your drive alone will help you perfect your skills and sometimes become even better than someone off the street who decided to learn your first language. Chill, I'm not throwing shade. I'm speaking the truth for myself and for others who don't have the courage to. Go after your dreams. Trust God, He will create opportunities beyond your wildest dreams! Keep pushing. Remain faithful to Him and yourself. Show people that God is real! I have my Army hat on for another fiscal year. All entities powered by priscillamcnealy.com (Royal Signs Interpreting Agency and Royal Signs Academy) are still in operation. Just not as much. As a result of me serving my country, please expect some delays when returning phone calls and emails. Services and classes are still being offered but with very limited slots.
