background:
Just looking at where he came from, nobody would think Tobias Perera was destined for anything other than a lifetime in prison, or an early grave. Truth be told, if you'd have asked him where he'd end up, he probably would have said something similar. Born in Brooklyn, New York to a single mother with three other children, life for him was always about getting by. It was about doing whatever you could to survive. As a child he knew what it felt like to struggle, to go to bed hungry and cold, to not have a bed to sleep in at all. While that might have broken some, while it have scarred others, Tobias let strengthen him into the man he is today.
As hard as growing up in poverty might have been, it certainly didn't put any strain on his relationship to his family. Perhaps it was because they were all going through it together, but Tobias and his brothers had always been incredibly close, especially after their mother left them when the oldest, Oliver, was eighteen, Tobias was ten. It was then that the Perera boys were forced to truly get by on their own, however they could. Oliver did whatever he could to make sure his brothers stayed together. He'd dropped out of high school to get a job so he could help support them, to pay for whatever bills or groceries they needed. While at even his young age, Tobias knew it was a lot for his brother, it only brought the family closer. He had so much respect for not only Oliver, but all of his brothers. Whatever they told him to do, he'd do without question.
As time went on, however, it was clear that Oliver's job and few side hustles weren't enough to support a family of three growing boys. Legit jobs quickly turned to things a little bit more questionable. His side hustles turned illegal. Whether it was cheating people out of their money, scamming, selling drugs, or straight up stealing, Oliver's dedication to keeping his brothers off the streets and fed was monumental. His dealings, however, would eventually go even further down the deep end when he was brought into the gang life. A life he always made sure to keep his brothers, especially his youngest, out of.
If only it were that easy.
Tobias was eleven when he picked his first pocket. It wasn't much, a wallet with thirty-five dollars in it. While all of his brothers tried to keep Toby's nose clean, they'd all been desperate, and the youngest wasn't spared. It started with simple wallet swiping or phone stealing. As time went on, he'd actually gotten good at it, better at it than his brothers. He'd always been quick, nimble, agile, but most of all he'd always been reckless enough to try anything. While some of his brothers, however, fell into the gang life, Tobias made a rule for himself never to physically hurt anyone, and to only steal from people who could afford it. So shoplifting, credit card fraud, swiping that nice ladies prada bag on 5th avenue, he was more than happy and able to do it.
It was a chaotic life to live, but it worked for them. It worked for them until it didn't.
As much as the Perera's liked to play the system, to gamble with luck, soon enough it all came crashing down. Tobias to this day still doesn't know exactly what happened. Oliver had been out with his 'crew' doing some job nobody bothered to tell Tobias about. He was told it went sideways, and Oliver ended up getting shot and killed. When his other brother, Joseph, found out, he took off in a rage and tried to retaliate. A day later Tobias and Alexander got a call that he'd been arrested for attempted murder. Unable to afford any kind of proper representation and having no support from his brother's 'crew', Tobias' brother was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
In the span of a month, he'd gone from having a full family of brothers, to having just one. Alexander had always been the most sensible of his brothers. He'd been straight laced, smart, ambitious, and eager to get out of their circumstance. He had been the one to tell Tobias to straighten the fuck up, that if he didn't he'd end up like Alex or Oli. It was enough of a wake up call for Tobias to look at himself and where he was headed. While he'd never gone in nearly as deep as his brothers, he could see it going there, and he was only 17 at the time. Like Alex, Tobias was decent enough in school, and when he graduated high school, he felt like he had to get out their neighborhood. There were too many memories, too many connections to a life he wanted out of.
For the next few years, he'd moved around, never staying in one place for too long. He'd tried the college route, attempted a few semesters of community college, but the money and the commitment had just been to much for him. He'd started working as a dancer when he was in his late teens, and while he'd made good money off of it, he didn't like feeling so exposed. Bartending had always been a fall back for him. His ability to connect with people, to schmooze them into giving them his money.
He moved to San Diego about a year and a half ago, and for the first time in his life he thought he actually saw a future for himself there. There was surf, sun, and an opportunity to build a life honestly. That is, until he heard the song, and decided to answer it.
