I think every Sonic Boom fan is obligated to post this scene at least once. It's in the fan club bylaws or something.

In Super Mario Bros. 3 (shown in the Super Mario All-Stars version but applying to all versions), the Wooden Blocks that release items when bumped from the side will normally release them upward, like a Question Block hit from below.

However, there is an extremely obscure edge case whereby if the space under the block is free, and the block is hit on the same frame that a Koopa Shell breaks a different block, the item will be released downward instead.

This requires an elaborate setup to actually achieve in-game, as seen in the footage in World 5-7. Mario has to destroy the blocks under the Wooden Block and then carry a Koopa Shell to that location and bump into it when it breaks one of the blocks, causing the Fire Flower to fall into the pit.
