get to know eric capitaine :
Where Eric actually came from, no one really knows. All he had been able to tell them when he had been found was that his name was Eric and his mommy and daddy fell off the boat. He was just a toddler, in the midst of a shipwreck, brought to land and quickly adopted by Selina and Marcus Capitaine.
The Capitaine family is one well known around Echo Isle for owning Capitaine Seas, one of the largest seafood distributors in the world. The business has been within the family for decades and it’s been expected for Eric since he was adopted that one day he’d take over.
Except that was never something he wanted, and both Selina and Marcus knew it. When Marcus was still alive, he tried his hardest to convince the boy that it wasn’t as bad as it seemed - that there was still plenty of freedom to live his own life. But when Eric was 25, his father passed and the corporate eyes turned to him.
Thankfully Selina stepped in and took over as interim CEO, giving Eric a bit more time to gather himself and figure out what he was going to do with his life. For all she wanted him to follow in his father’s footsteps, she wasn’t going to force it upon him. However, she did give him a deadline - that he had five years to decide what he was going to do. On his thirtieth birthday, she would be stepping down for either Eric or someone else to permanently take over.
The years have passed, with only one more before he’s thirty, and Eric still has no clue what he’s going to do. He knows what his heart wants, to continue sailing and finding a dream of his own - but he can’t shake the obligation to his late father to take over the business. Perhaps he should be focusing more on figure it all out, but he continues to put it off and avoid any and all serious responsibilities.
He’s obsessed with the sea. He has a double story study full of different artifacts he’s found over the years of sailing around Echo Isle and its surrounding islands. It’s not something he shows people often, wanting to have at least something primarily to himself that he doesn’t have to share with the rest of the world.
A few years back he had been placed under a siren spell by Shelly Morgan. It lasted long enough for Eric to propose, fully believing her to be the one. However on the night of his bachelor party, he and his friends jokingly and drunkenly wound up at Mary Sanderson’s fortune telling shop. It was there that she revealed he was under a spell, lifting it for him and making him realize the entire thing had been a lie. He thanked Mary, leaving a hefty tip, and promising to return later for a proper thank you. Little did he know that in replace of the spell Shelly had him under, Mary had placed a new one on him herself. One of her sister’s bewitching love spells.
Eric immediately broke everything off with Shelly, canceling the wedding and publicly shunning the girl for using him. Though he didn’t out her as a siren, knowing the dangers that magical creatures faced - he did somewhat ruin her public image, at least in the higher social circles of Echo Isle.
Ever since he’s been infatuated with Mary and continues to stop by her shop. He’s willing to do almost anything she asks of him and is trying to build a relationship with her, despite the fact that she doesn’t always seem that interested in him at all.
A few weeks ago, he nearly died at sea - a fire starting on his boat during a storm. He ensured all of his friends were safely on the lifeboats and was about to escape himself when he fell off of the edge into the rough waters. To this day he doesn’t know how he survived, but he does believe a girl with a beautiful voice saved him. He tried to tell his mother this, but she wrote it off as stress from the accident, and Eric hasn’t told anyone else since. But he can’t help the way the girl’s voice has been echoing in his head ever since.
