For a second she thinks maybe she shouldn’t admit that. Everyone was concerned about Peeta, and Johanna and Annie Cresta as well, but Prim knows Gale well enough to know when he’s trying to run away from something. She’s seen the look when he’d go out into the forest and not return for hours, and that’s not as easy to do underground.

He forced a smile onto his face, trying to make her feel at ease. Like he was still the strong one. The brave one. Not the boy that kept zoning out and imagining himself in those cells and hearing the screams of everyone he loved crying out as they too were tortured and dying around him. He knew the way those screams sounded now. 

Prim doesn’t want to know. Gale is one of the strongest people she’s ever known, if something is hurting him this much she can’t imagine what it would do to her, but she doesn’t like seeing him in pain. She reaches out and offers him her hand, the only symbol of comfort she can give underground.

“Hey, Prim, I got you something!”

He runs quickly through the small crowd in the town center, trying to catch up with the younger girl before she disappears from his sight, a small baby rabbit nestled in his game bag. 

One of his snares had caught the things mom and he felt bad, normally he would try and save the rabbit to let it go back but he got to it too late. “Here.” Reaching back into his bag he holds out the baby animal for her inspection. 

But Gale, she turns when she does hear him calling out her name, he always treats her the same. 

She doesn’t ask what it is, she knows he’ll hand it over and when he does she can’t help the little high pitched ‘aww’ she lets out for the small animal cradled in her hands.
