what happens when people stop loving each other
I'm home for spring break so this means bearing witness to my parents and what's left of their marriage. My parents have been having marital issues for a while. Sometimes I look at them now and can't even image a time when they were compatible. They're less like a couple and more like a pair of strangers who share a bed. They fight often and I can see both person's point of view but they just can't meet in the middle. I just feel like they're waiting for the other ball to drop, for someone to say the word "divorce". I don't know if this will realistically happen, both my parents are in their mid-50s. Finding another partner seems daunting at that age. We also just moved for my dad's work so we're in a whole new area. My mother has been a stay-at-home mom for the last 25 years. If they do split up, I'm not sure where this will leave her. How do you restart when you're halfway finished with your life? Realistically I'm don't think they'll ever get divorced, my mom's too prideful and my dad's too scared of my mom. They've done couples counseling, but there's too many problems to just 'forget about'. My mom keeps a lot of secrets from my dad and it's really hard to be caught in the middle of that. My dad is so bad at being forthcoming and incredibly stubborn. It's difficult to navigate that and being in the middle of all this, I just want to fix it. I think divorce would help but I'm worried where that would leave my mom. Maybe they're not too far gone but that's what it feels like. They fight, they try to smooth things over, they end up getting into a worse fight about everything, they slowly forget while inching further apart. Cycle continues. I don't know what my preferred outcome would be, I just want them both to be happy and I know they aren't. They're not apart of anything together anymore they just live their lives beside one another. I can't believe I'm saying this but I can't wait to go back to my 4x6 dorm room.
