GINA PORTER AND RICKY BOWEN ↳ HSMTMTS 4.01 | “High School Musical 4
"You're not a maybe, you're a yes"
— High School Musical: The Musical: The Series 4.03
"I just thought maybe we could write this [song] together."
In season 1, Ricky can't/isn't ready to express how he feels about Nini in his own words, so he uses her's instead (by singing her song, "I Think I Kinda Ya Know", back to her during auditions). It's not very well-received, at least not by Nini (Gina's eyes light up when she hears Ricky sing for the first time). Partially because Nini has a new boyfriend and she doesn't appreciate Ricky effectively forcing his way back into her life by trying out for the musical...but mostly because he still can't say "I love you" to her, even if it's in a song (that he didn't even write). Later, Ricky wrote "Just for a Moment" for Nini, but never actually sang it to her (at least not in their reality...and when he did sing an excerpt of it to Big Red, Red immediately thought it was about Gina).
Then, in season 2, he writes Nini yet another song (two, actually, but "The Perfect Gift" is so generic that I consider it more of a cute holiday song by Josh than a song Ricky wrote for Nini) — and again, he doesn't actually get to sing it to her. They're so bad at communicating with one another that they spend the entirety of that day (Valentine's Day) trying to meet up, but never being able to. They can't even get the timing of a simple phone call right (a call that was Gina's idea, by the way) so Ricky has to sing "Even When" to Nini's voicemail (and vice versa).
Later on in season 2, Ricky & Nini were tasked (by Miss Jenn) with writing an original song for Beauty & The Beast together and they couldn't do it. Nini, instead, wrote the song on her own — a song that ended up being about how she feels, understandably, idolized and suffocated by her relationship with Ricky...which she told Kourtney not to tell Ricky about and then told Ricky, to his face, that the song wasn't about him.
Ricky writes Nini another song ("Let You Go") after they break up (or at least he finishes it post-breakup) that he claims was written for Nini, as a goodbye or some kind of "Hail Mary", but he never sings it to her...because it wasn't so much about her as it was about him grieving the childhood relationship they had and coming to terms with the fact that ending it was the right choice for both of them.
My point being, Ricky has always written songs for someone else (or claimed they were for someone else), but never with them (technically, there's that throw away line in s2 where Carlos mentions that Ricky wrote some of the lyrics in "In A Heartbeat", the song for Seb, but I'm talking romantic relationships here). He couldn't write a song with Nini because they were never on the same page, they couldn't communicate with or understand each other personally, so they couldn't collaborate musically (& even the songs he wrote for her rarely went the way he wanted them to).
Which is why it speaks volumes when Ricky says he wants to write a song with Gina. Finally, he's in a relationship with someone that's built on true friendship, mutual support and understanding (& vice versa for Gina, too), someone that he can communicate and collaborate with. With Nini, it was always about pushing his feelings onto her, but now he doesn't just want to sing a song to Gina about just his feelings (though he'll do that, too) he wants to listen to her, to know how she feels. He wants to work together to create something that they can share, that's not just his or just her's, but uniquely their's.
In season 2, when Nini flees after Ricky tries to talk to her about the song she wrote ("The Rose Song") she says something like, "It's just a song, Ricky." to which he responds, "A song can mean everything."
He was right, a song can mean everything.
Every single take I’ve seen from Rinis/PWs about Gina continue making it clear they do not get her as a character and have been watching this show on a very surface level because how it’s Gina wanting to keep her relationship with Ricky a secret to avoid the opinions of strangers influencing their relationship translate to Gina doesn’t care about Ricky and it’s unsure about their relationship.
It makes so much sense that Gina would want to keep their relationship a secret to avoid any negative opinion about their relationship specially if we consider the documentary might have made them seem negatively. Her and Ricky are not regular people anymore and you could assume they’re somehow famous/well known at SLC now and therefore it is scary to finally start a relationship with the person you have been wanting to be with for so long and also having to handle other people’s misguided opinions and break that bubble they’ve created.
Might you, this secret dating plot was hinted at by Tim at the end of Season 3 but Rina’s are the only ones that actually pay attention to things.
Gina isn’t the “idgaf queen” you are convinced she is. Gina 1.0 was a fake persona. Season 2 showed she cares deeply about everyone’s opinions and it’s very emotional. Gina is finally experiencing stability. A proper home. A long lasting group of friends. A whole another year in the same environment and school. And finally she’s with the guy she’s been wanting to be with for a whole year. It’s normal for a 16/17 year old to be scared of anything disrupting her new sense of stability. You all don’t care about Gina if you think her wanting to keep her relationship away from everyone is a negative thing. Also, it’s Gina Porter we are talking about. A focused and career driven woman that has many goals.
Media literacy keeps failing you all and that’s why you all keep losing every single season.

RINA SECRET SANTA 2022 | happy holidays rajan! @ginaporterr (in/sp)
I was re-watching the 'Kristoff Lullaby' scene and now I have a lot of things to say.
This scene was just Ricky being able to say how he feels through his character's song, something that, to him, must've felt insane 'cause he's always expressing himself by singing his own lyrics.
But I don't think he realised that he was singing his feelings until he started singing on opening night. And I say that 'cause you can pinpoint the exact moment he realized he was singing about Gina.
He started the song as Kristoff and ended as Ricky, and I think Joshua did an amazing job portraying that. You can see him realizing that he is singing about himself and how he feels about her so clearly when he sings "How much I've changed 'cause of you".
(The way the camera shows her when he says " 'cause of you" 🥺)
And the rest of the song is just so full of little details about them... Like: "You live life fearlessly(...) You trust, you hope, you dare. You choose to feel and care. I though that I was strong 'till I bumped into you." That's literally them! It's Rina!😭
Also the iconic scene of him telling Gina his conception of love changed because of her??
I love this scene a lot and am a huge fan of whoever made the decision of making Ricky play Kristoff and sing this song.
every time anti rina shippers come up with a new reason why they don’t ship them or whatever it just proves more and more they don’t understand ricky or gina. the creator saying gina is going to be the one “setting the rules” and that the their relationship “will be on her terms” is because her entire life nothing has been on her terms she’s just used to change after change and having to move all the time and having no choice in things that goes on in her life. it’s a good thing that their relationship will in many ways be on her terms. it in no way means she’s going to be doing all the work in it???? you guys can just say don’t ship them without making it obvious you don’t understand them as characters all the time. hilarious that the person i read say what they said about gina having to do all the work and it not being an equal relationship conveniently ignored the creator saying gina’s world in general is finally going to be on her terms before even mentioning her and ricky’s relationship.
gina & ricky + their pining eras
Rinis stay calling Gina "aggressive" and PWs keep acting like Ricky's love for Gina isn’t genuine and you want to tell me these takes aren’t influenced by racism? There’s not logical explanation as to why you would think Ricky loving Gina is so inexplicable with all the evidence three seasons have provided you unless you don’t view Gina as someone worthy of that love (Gina can only be loved by those that fit their narrative). The problem with those rinis turned pws is that they don’t view Gina as a self insert like they do with Nini. It’s been proved fandoms dislike characters of color, especially if those "get in the way" of their designated ship that involves a white boy. I’ve been in fandoms for a long time. This behavior is very transparent and it steams from racism.

Gina: *breathes* Ricky: *exists*
Ricky: ♥‿♥ Gina: ♥‿♥
Some people be like "They've ruined Gina’s character. S2 Gina would’ve never done this to EJ" and yeah, you are right, but not because she was a better character but because S2 Gina was trying to put everyone else before herself and would’ve tolerated EJ’s behavior for that.
Gina's entire arc this season has been about finding balance between her S1 and S2 self. Gina sang a whole solo about it. The lyrics for Balance and her speech before that made it very clear that most of her behavior from S2 was a watered down version of herself made to please people around her instated of herself. She felt like she had to act that way to form those friendships and her scene with Nini last season confirmed she didn’t want to come up as too "off putting" because of her energy.
While Gina from S1 was an exaggerated version of what she thought she should be to protect herself. S2 was her tuning down all her ambition to please others around her. The only person that got to know the soft and caring but poised and spunky Gina, her realest self, was Ricky.
S3 Gina made a bow to herself that she will find balance within her, not longer Gina 1.0 or Gina 2.0 but Gina. You can still feel Gina trying hard to be accommodating for others the first eps of the season but can see her coming into her own as the season goes on. This shows in how her wardrobe progressively goes from flowery pastel pink to bolder edgier looks. The self assured, ambitious, fearlessly protective Gina that wants the lead role, is supportive of her friends, is sassy but also a secret romantic that wants a summer romance, tries to mentor Emmy, knows she is capable of shining and has learned what she desires of a relationship as well as her own worth is Gina at her very core.
S3 Gina is the perfect balance from S1 and S2.
If you need "S2" Gina to come back when she was arguably the most insecure and unlike herself she’s ever been — you don’t like Gina. You just want someone that panders to EJ's needs. Gina is finally getting what she wants and aware she doesn’t have to dim her light in order to be loved and accepted by her friends. Tim teased we will see a more assertive Gina that will be settling her own rules from now on and I can’t wait for her S4 main girl serve.

rina week ♡ day seven: free choice → favorite rina theory
the chocolates theory
"I knew you were alone. I knew you needed something or deserved something. So I called your mom. I asked her to send them. I didn’t want to confuse you. And I was going through such a weird time with… and I feel bad that I’m even saying this but now I wish I'd signed the card" — This whole fragment from Ricky’s confession script confirms what we have been saying all alone. Ricky was emotionally cheating and the whole scene on 203 was SO charged. He was using the chocolates jokes as a way to deflect because he was feeling guilty about it.
You can see it all on his face during 203. You can see his grey sweatpants delivering them. Gina’s mom texted right after Ricky did. He was anticipating Gina’s text message. Ricky doesn’t like Gina "because it’s the only girl left" or because "Nini left". He has liked her all this time.

the funniest part about pws saying gina “isn’t gina” in 3b compared to s2-3a is the fact that gina wasn’t being fully herself in those parts of the seasons. s2 she was holding herself back (read the balance lyrics + her talk about getting the lead before the song) and in s3a she was watering herself down to be the perfect girlfriend (which was confirmed by the way). gina acted more like herself in 3b than ever. you guys can keep misunderstanding her character and who she actually is just because you’re ej stans or past rinis turned pws who never actually liked her in the first place (which we all predicted how you’d treat her after she broke up with ej and/or got together with ricky) or only started liking her because of her not being completely herself. your false idea of the characters doesn’t make them ooc, and that goes for ricky and ej as well since so many of you try to claim they were ooc too.
He’s my favourite Rina shipper. Ricky would be balling his eyes out and Jet would be like “I fucking know you’re crying over Gina.” And JUST LAUGH IN HIS FACE LMAO.
It’s fabulous.
