Biopsies aren't nearly as fun as they sound.
I'm supposed to be done with this part, but over the summer I found what feels like a lump on my left side. My doctor wasn't worried and thought it was an oil cyst or some fat. After 6 months (of me procrastinating and not wanting to have more tests) I had the ultrasound my doctor recommended. Of course, the radiologist didn't think it was a cyst and wanted to do a biopsy. Side note: if you know any young women (other than me) who have had preventative surgery and your response is anything other than "what a smart decision for your future!" You should just go straight to hell. We don't have time for you. (This rule especially applies to ultrasound technicians working at breast centers). Can you tell it was a rough day? So I had the biopsy today and am really hoping this is the last of it. With any luck, it'll just be a lymph node that I happen to be able to feel because I have no tissue there. On the plus side, I have no feeling around my left boob, so nothing hurt (other than the ridiculous sound of the punch contraption they use to take tissue. No matter how much they warn you, that noise is always jarring. And then they do it 4 more times)! Now I just get to chill with my adorable tiny icepack and try not to freak out until I get my results on Thursday. I'm thinking some cheesy romance novels should do the trick.
Wrapping up
Iām getting my tattoos on Saturday.
Itās hard to believe this entire process has taken just over a year. My doctor found the lump in August 2015 and Iāll be all done (with the breast cancer-related portion) this week.
I have gained so much since I found out I was BRCA positive. Does it suck knowing that Iām predisposed to breast and ovarian cancer? For sure. But it also comes with a power and control over my body that makes me feel like a total badass.
Thereās no way of knowing how healthcare will change in the coming months/years, but I encourage my friends & family to keep getting tested, even if you donāt have a family history (I didnāt). Be a control freak and know your genes!
Correction: This Hurts A Lot
Had a little refresher on my left side today. It hadnāt healed as nicely as my doctor wanted, so she re-stitched me in the office today.
Being awake and talking to your doctor while she essentially operates on you is a strange, strange thing. Luckily, the thing that hurt the most were the shots to numb me up.
Now my already gnarly scar is a bit gnarlier (but looks great already!) and goes all the way around to my back. It hurts a tiny bit now and Iām a little nauseous, but all in all Iām a very happy camper!
Thatās all for now, buddies. See you in October!
Whoops! Forgot to update.
I had my exchange surgery on Friday, March 4th. Everything went extremely well and it took about 5 hours. My plastic surgeon is still the biggest rockstar on the planet (despite her refusal to watch Botched, no matter how many times I bring it up) and as usual, St. John's has made everything easy and comfortable. So in case you don't already know, the exchange surgery (or 2nd phase of breast reconstruction after a mastectomy) is when they switch out the tissue expanders for permanent implants. There were SO many implant options to choose from, but I decided on 800cc high profile (if you put them on a table with a low profile, they'd be the taller ones), round (as opposed to tearderop or anatomical shaped), smooth silicone gel implants. I even have a nice little card with all this info and their serial numbers. Once the implants are in, the real fun begins. My doctor and I discussed fat grafting (using the fat from lipo to fill in any areas that needed it) and that she'd take from the area above my ribcage on each side. My mom and I have lovingly termed this area my bat wings. When the surgeon took out all of my breast tissue, she had to go pretty far back, leaving me with these interesting flaps that gave me a weird bra muffin-top situation. ANYWAY, I'm left with about a 10 inch incision on each side, but it was so worth it. I also have some seriously interesting bruising going on. Now that the surgery is done, I can start thinking about tattoos. There will definitely be a cross stitch theme happening (get it?) Hopefully, I'll be ready for P.ink Day in October! That's all for a little while. I'll check back in when October rolls around. Thanks again for all your soft hugs and warm thoughts! -The Brave Little Toaster

Try and keep up.
Holy crap, the last 6 months have gone by so fast. Hereās how it all went down:
August 6, 2015 - My geneticist finds a lump during my yearly check up/screening strategy meeting - she thinks itās just a cyst, but suggests I get an MRI soon.
August 27, 2015 - MRI - results show itās probably a fibroadenoma, but they want to do a biopsy to be sure.
September 11, 2015 - Core needle biopsy of lump in left breast - results are normal, but there were some atypical cells. My geneticist refers me to Dr. Dinome, Chief of Surgery and Head of the Breast Center at St. Johnās.
October 7, 2015 - Lump excision aka peace out, Gladys,
October 13, 2015 - Dr, Dinome confirmed that the lump was benign, but it had doubled in size in the few weeks between the biopsy and surgery.
November 30, 2015 - Preventative double mastectomy by Dr, Dinome and 1st phase of reconstruction with tissue expanders by Dr. La Via - no complications. Pathology of breast tissue found no cancer, but LOTS of benign junk chillinā in my boobs.
After 9 appointments with my rockstar plastic surgeon, 4 fills, 1 stubborn incision, and countless yards of medical tape & gauze, we now arrive at...
March 4, 2016 - Exchange surgery/2nd phase of breast reconstruction - swap out expanders for silicone implants. Itās an outpatient procedure and Iāll be back to work in a week.
This whole situation is still a bit surreal. I am incredibly lucky to have had such a tremendously positive experience (with my team of badass female doctors), free of scary complications or disappointing results. Ā
I got the consolation prize of smaller, perkier boobs that arenāt trying to kill me, and I couldnāt be happier.

The decision to have a mastectomy was such a no-brainer (well maybe a semi-brainer) for me and I like to make jokes, but itās so important to understand how much most women struggle with it.
7 weeks post-op
So itās been 7 weeks since my surgery (bonkers) and I feel really great!Ā
Aside from a hiccup with my incisions healing on my left side - plus 6 weeks of the messiest cream in the world and then getting said incisions re-stitched - everything has gone shockingly well.Ā
Iāve had 3 fills so far and plan to get my final one tomorrow, assuming Iām happy size-wise. I still feel like the girl avatar in any video game played by a teenage boy, when they press a button and make her boobs bigger. Except instead of a button, itās a giant needle and it takes several weeks.Ā
Iāve been back at work for 2 whole weeks and itās busier than ever, but it's awesome!Ā
Moral of the story is: things are good, I feel good. Yay!
1st fill down
Remember that giant needle in cartoons whenever a kid gets a shot? That comically large needle? Well, it exists and today my wonderful doctor used it to pump up my expanders a little.Ā
You know you found the right plastic surgeon when she saysĀ āthis is your Pulp Fiction momentā while sheās stabbing you in the boob with the worldās biggest needle.Ā
Things are finally getting funnier, people. I swear the photo below isnāt even that off-base.
Peace out, drains.
Warning: Photo of me in a bra. Just sayinā.
I canāt begin to describe for you what having drains is like, but theyāre a necessary evil. If thereās one thing I could tell anyone considering this surgery, other than the immense relief Iāve felt over the past 2 weeks, is that drains are the worst part of this, but theyāre also the shortest.Ā
Side note: I remember watching True Life: Iām Getting BreasI Implants, and they NEVER mentioned this. They would cry about how awful the pain was, but no one was stripping and emptying and measuring their drains.
But I digress. The most important thing is that IāM GETTING MY DRAINS OUT TOMORROW!!!!! I decided to commemorate this with a super-attractive selfie showing them in all their glory. If you canāt tell, they come from under each side, have long tubes, then have to clip on to my bra.Ā
Youāre welcome, America.
I guess they can't all be good days...
Yesterday started out so great! I got a visit from my best friend. She brought me chicken and pajamas, which is obviously why weāre best friends. We watched lots of tv and then got some gluten-free cupcakes. Best day ever, right?
Thatās when everything went a little downhill. Drains suck. I fully understand why I need them, why I still have them, and I can even appreciate what theyāre doing to help my body heal. But that doesnāt make them suck any less. I accidentally yanked on my right drain site and I was in agony. Itās the gift that keeps on giving because now itās not taped down as nicely and therefore keeps hurting. Needless to say, I cannot wait for next Wednesday when these things are gone. I will be doing a pretty serious happy dance. Weāre talking touchdown-level dancing here and itāll be adorable.
On a totally separate note: bras. I LOVE the gigantic surgical bra my doctor gave me. Itās comfy and sits nice and low on my back. That being said, the desire to wear a bra that I can keep reasonably hidden is big. The desire to wear a black bra is bigger.
I donāt wear light colors, so Iāve never had a need for bras that arenāt black, aside from the occasional nude on the off chance I accidentally end up in a white shirt. ANYWAY, I ordered a few sizes of a promising-looking black bra and Iām stoked! Weāll see how it goes.

Day 6
Today was the first day I didn't wake up in major need of pain meds (maybe that's because I took one at 4am, but I'm choosing to believe I'm just doing really well). It's also the first time I did my own drains. For those of you not in the know, I'll spare you the details, but this is a mini-milestone for me. My mom and sister have been doing such a good job taking care of me, but I like doing things myself. Lucky for them, I still can't cook to save my life, and I don't intend to learn anytime soon. I didn't sleep so well last night, but I think that has more to do with how much napping I did yesterday. Seeiously, I'm so good at napping. I should win all the awards. As for my newly flat chest, one side is a little red and a lot bruised but the doctor isn't worried. It feels oddly liberating having no boobs when they've been such a burden all my life! Most importantly though, today I get my first visitor, Miss Sammie Berman. We're going to watch Gilmore Girls and probably do nothing else. Just the way I like it!
Oh man, this hurts a lot. But the hurt is nothing compared to the relief I'm feeling. Plus, there's this ridiculously adorable stuffed animal (courtesy of the best sister ever) to keep me company. Thank you all for the well wishes and flowers!
Less than a week
Itās really ridiculous how fast November has flown by. Iām feeling more anxious than nervous at this point. I know Iām in great hands and will lovingly doted on by my wonderful family, Iām just ready to get past the really hard part.
I know the first couple weeks are going to suck. Iāve been collecting books and TV shows to get be through it (Iāve requested puppy pictures as well), but Itās still going to suck. After that, this will all just be a smart decision I made for my future. I can stop being super uncomfortable when someone calls be ābraveā and just be smart. I will only accept the brave label if itās followed by ālittle toasterā.
T-minus 28 days
My surgery has officially been set for November 30th WOOHOO! Just in case I needed another sign that Iām most definitely doing the right thing, the date I wanted just so happened to work perfectly for my 2 amazing and amazingly busy doctors. Signs people, theyāre real and they mean stuff.
Anyway, I have my pre-op physical tomorrow then Iāll be in BIRTHDAY mode pretty much until Thanksgiving, which just so happens to also be the weekend of my 10 year high school reunion. Thatās right, Iām getting a new tattoo, turning 28, celebrating my most favorite holiday (itās all about the food), going to my reunion and then JUST IN CASE that wasnāt a busy enough month, Iām also having a double mastectomy.Ā
Should get interesting.
Guess who doesnāt have cancer!
Thatās right, no cancer for meeeee. The pathology came back and Gladys was just a regular old benign fibroadenoma. She did grow over a centimeter in like 3 weeks, which is bonkers.
Thatās all for a little while. Iām on track for my mastectomy end of November/beginning of December. Woohoooooooo!

First day without Gladys
Gladys is gone and I feel pretty good. Thereās been a little bit of pain, but nothing some ice and Tylenol canāt fix.
The doctor said Gladys looked like a pretty standard fibroadenoma, so thatās good news! Weāll have the full pathology on Tuesday.
Peace out, lump.
So my lump comes out tomorrow. Iāve named her Gladys. Gladys and I are not friends.
Once they do the excision and pathology (and give the no-cancer thumbs up), theyāll be able to schedule my big surgery.
Oddly enough, the most stressful part of all of this has been finding a front-closing sports bra that fits. It is not easy.
