Morrigan sketch 🔮
I sketched Morrigan for my 3D challenge. I cropped out the lower half on purpose so I wouldn't be tempted to sculpt her hands XD The plan is to sculpt her, retopologize the model, paint the textures, rig her, and then make a head animation, probably using blend shapes, but we'll see. I've also been obsessing over the idea of making myself a beautiful elven dagger using paper, water, glue, and foil. I'll let that idea simmer for a while. If it refuses to leave me alone.. I'll probably have to give it a try 🐸

The original plotter and instigator. I'm curious to see how they deal with her entity (for lack of a better term, I guess) in Veilguard.
morriana + fem warden sharing a tent ideas (and JUST sleeping…) so like obviously in the beginning they’re all apart…i don’t think that even when they start getting closer they immediately all decide to share a tent. like i said in an earlier post fem warden begins to sleep with morrigan so she’s not all alone to cope with her nightmares…and even then it’s not something she does every night. but I feel like she grows closer with morrigan faster, leliana is a little more of a slow burn but i think warden ends up developing feelings for the both of them very quickly…and instead of fighting over the warden like they do in the game (YUCK!!!!!!) morrigan is like “well…she loves both of us so let’s just…see who she picks” and leliana is like “why does she have to pick at all?? hehehe i see the way we all look at eachother…” and morrigan is like “WHAT??????? well wait u aren’t wrong I guess” she did not plan to fall for one person, let alone a woman, let alone TWO women but she’s really just like “well im free anyways so i might as well have fun before i run away forever?” and they end up loving eachother anyways so like there’s no reason for them to even catfight over a man like in the game bc one warden is a woman and two they all want to kiss eachother anyways…i think they would like all share a tent not long before the battle with the archdemon. like it takes a while for them to accept that they all love eachother which isn’t seen often at all…but since they’re the ones literally saving the whole world from blight, they don’t care what the rest of the world thinks since they only continue to draw breath because of them. so yeah i think like it takes them a WHILE to all sleep together but that they don’t really have a specific order to it. usually fem warden falls asleep first since she’s often exhausted from all the armor and heavy weapon wielding. i feel like morrigan tries to sleep soon after she does but is also trying to be conscious of when warden experiences a nightmare…but she doesn’t get much sleep anyways because she will sometimes catch leliana just staring at their faces. morrigan will be like “can you be any LESS creepy???” where leliana is completely unfazed and is just like “youre both just so pretty when you sleep…hehehehe” and morrigan honestly gives up so she just decides to fall asleep…leliana also begins to look out for when the warden is having a nightmare, and usually plays with her hair or holds her until she wakes up whenever it’s obvious she’s experiencing one…but yeah once they accept that they all love eachother and learn eachothers quirks they share a tent pretty often until the battle of denerim!!
petition for warden x morrigan x leliana's ship name to be warriana...?

some thoughts i have on morrigan and her relationship with motherhood (i will probably be making a hundred of these)
keep in mind that one i am NOT. a mother. i am a 19 year old girl who loves mothers and believes that the experiences of motherhood need to be talked about MORE than they already are in a world full of people who constantly disrespect mothers. so this is important to me!!!! and its also just some practice to better acquaint myself with morrigan’s character…anyways here we go.
I’m trying to reference solely what we know about the Dark Ritual and all that surrounds it based on what we learn from DAO because, at the time, that is also all the information Morrigan has.
I imagine that Flemeth likely holds resentment towards Morrigan and every other child she’s had, which we can infer based on the abuse Morrigan was put through. I doubt Flemeth ever wanted to be pregnant; she didn’t want children, she only wanted (needed) them as a vessel. Flemeth likely didn’t explain anything about the reproductive process beyond what Morrigan absolutely needed to know, as well as the details of the ritual. Morrigan probably learned more about how her mother seduced and bedded men in order to use them for her own purposes, which is pretty much spelled out for us in this dialogue between Morrigan and Leliana:
Leliana: They say your mother is Flemeth, a witch of the Korcari Wilds.
Morrigan: They also say that washing your feet in winter makes you catch cold in the head, but we all know that is not true. But sometimes they are right and they are right in this.
Leliana: You know the stories about—
Morrigan: Of course. You think my mother would let me go without telling me all the stories of her youth?
Leliana: My mother told me stories too. She was the one who kindled my love of the old tales and legends.
Morrigan: Hmph. my mother's stories curdled my blood and haunted my dreams. No little girl wants to hear about the Wilder men her mother took to her bed, using them till they were spent, then killing them. No little girl wants to be told that this is also expected of her, once she comes of age.
Leliana: I... uh... I see.
Morrigan: No, you don't. You really don't.
That is the context in which sex and pregnancy was explained by Flemeth to Morrigan. How to use and abuse people, while also actively being used and abused, and to be expected to perpetuate that cycle. All the while Flemeth likely resents the fact that she had to have Morrigan at all. As far as Morrigan is aware, Flemeth only had her for the sole purpose of taking over her body; not out of any desire for children or maternal instinct, but to one day be physically taken over - which just seems like something Morrigan will have to get used to. First, she has to perform the Dark Ritual with somebody she doesn’t like for reasons she was essentially manipulated into, then be host to the offspring conceived during said ritual for 9 months, then finally have her body taken from her by Flemeth. She repeatedly has to be the host of some unwanted external being.
In Flemeth’s case, she at least benefited from playing host to Maker knows how many men and consequently however many babies. That’s not the case for Morrigan. Sure, she can harness the Old God’s magic or whatever, but that’s more of a side effect that stems from Flemeth’s overarching, ancient master plan. At this point, Morrigan has no idea that she’d ever think of this baby as anything beyond a parasitic thing that she’s growing out of obligation to her mother. There’s more to be said about Morrigan’s evolution as she raises Kieran, but I don’t want to completely hijack this post. For relevance’s sake, all I’ll say is that Morrigan very likely did not know about all the ways she would change emotionally and mentally, or even the extent of the physical transformations she may experience, both during the pregnancy and after.
This post has given me sooooo many more things to think about, too. In terms of the Dark Ritual, Flemeth’s relationships with her children, and so on….
Can you explain the Flemeth-is-an-abusive-mother thing? I know Flemeth has some flaws but I've never gotten any outright abusive vibes? Maybe I just missed a lot?
Morrigan will tell the warden of a time when she was just a little girl, Flemeth broke the mirror she loved for the purpose of teaching her not to love things. “To teach me a lesson, Flemeth took the mirror and smashed it upon the ground. I was heartbroken.” “Beauty and love are fleeting and have no meaning. Survival has meaning. Power has meaning. Without those lessons I would not be here today, as difficult as they might have been.” Morrigan looks back at this and sees it as deserving. “Flemeth was right to break me of my fascination.”
If you give Morrigan a replica of the mirror after she tells you the story, she asks what you want in return. When you tell her it’s a gift, she says, “You say that as if I should be accustomed to such a thing. I have… never received a gift, not one which did not come at a price.”
Asking Morrigan if Flemeth is her real mother gets a number of telling dialogues. If the warden asks Morrigan if she loves Flemeth, she will answer “What an odd thing to say. Why must “love” enter into the equation? Flemeth taught me everything I needed to learn. How to survive. The meaning of power. The truth of men. If other mothers do not teach these things, then I believe them the lesser.” Morrigan doesn’t understand the very idea of loving your mother. When Morrigan asks the warden about their mother, and the warden says they love her, she responds “I find myself a little envious, to tell the truth. But it matters not. Let us move on.”
If the warden enters a relationship with Morrigan, she will eventually ask what the warden thinks of love. She herself says, “What I am saying is that I have been foolish. I have allowed myself to become… too close. This is a weakness.” “I would not… I am not like other women. I am not worth your distraction..” Morrigan was taught that love is a weakness and that she is undeserving of love.
In the Fade sequence of Broken Circle, a spirit is attempting to convince Morrigan it is Flemeth. “I am your mother… do you not love me?” The spirit says. Morrigan does not believe it. The spirit slaps her across the face and says “Are you more clever than your own dear mother? Surely such pride must be punished! There! That is for not showing respect!” Morrigan’s response to this is, “That is far more like it, but it is too little too late, spirit.” This suggests that Flemeth has physically hurt Morrigan, as that is what she says is more akin to her mother than speaking of love.
If Morrigan is in the party when Brosca reencounters their abusive as fuck mother, afterwards Morrigan will comment “We have more in common than I thought.”
Morrigan is an emotional and very likely physical and verbal abusive survivor. And when she tells Flemeth in DA:I that she is many things, but will never be the mother Flemeth was to her, it hits me so hard. Every single time.
