“You don’t have to say anything.” Being here for Willheim is enough. He parts his lips to tell her as much, but it’s impossible to get anything out. It has taken longer than Will might have liked, but Henrik cannot deny their feelings. Though every part of him warns against encouraging María to stay, it’s what Will wants. Which, in comparison, is a much easier message to relay. “It’s for his sake. He would want you here. And if—when he wakes up, the doctor said having a system to support him is important.” Considering the lack of visitors, it looks like this may be the entirety of Will’s support system.
As María steps forward, she addresses Will with a familiarity that strikes Henrik at once. Having only been witness to half of their relationship, it was too easy to brush aside his brother’s insistence. Now, watching them together, he realizes how much they mean to each other. In fact, it’s a sight that feels wrong to watch. Like he is intruding, peering in through a window, as nothing but an outsider.
He is about to slip quietly through the door when she addresses him again. “Would I…?” It doesn’t really seem like there is much of an option. Anyway, Henrik will take all of the help that anyone wants to offer. If that happens to come in the form of divine intervention, well, who is he to argue? Bowing his head where he stands, Henrik watches for a moment before shutting his eyes. Is this right? It has been so long since he has prayed. This, too, feels foreign. “Amen,” he says softly, opening his eyes. “You being here… means a lot to him. I know it does.” There’s a pause. “Why are you here?”
“ don't i ? ” maría counters, “ if it were not for me, this would not have happened and you would not have to see him like this. ” her seemingly never ending stream of tears continue down her cheeks, “ my — my brother, bernardo, he is very protective of me. ” she gives her head a quick shake, “ that is not an excuse for any of this, of course ! i just —— could you ever forgive me for this ? ” both willheim and maría were well aware of the adversity in the face of their starcrossed love. most notably gaining the that the approval of each other's loved ones. and from her brief interaction with henrik on new year's, maría was almost certain he would probably never warm up to her. there is no one that everybody likes. although much to her surprise, he is offering an olive branch instead of his signature cold shoulder and maría jumps to retrieve it. “ sí, sí. i want to be here to — to support him. if you will have me. ” her voice suddenly grows much quieter, “ are your parents not coming ? ”
finally allowing herself to tear her gaze away from willheim's unconscious form, big watery brown eyes find henrik's. “ you... you letting me stay here with him. it means a lot to me, too. gracias. ” why are you here ? his question brings her pause. it is a simple inquiry with a simple answer and yet, maría struggles to put it all into words. a gentle yet shaky exhale before, “ porque yo... ” the heel of her free hand wipes away the warm tears continuing to flood her cheeks, “ because i love him. ” she'll finally declare. “ i love him more than anything. he is my love, he is my life. without him... there is nothing. ” her voice breaks giving way to more tears, “ if i could, i would take all of this pain away from him and give it to myself. ”
