Lone Pine University is an extremely prestigious, historic university that is mentioned in the same breath as Harvard and Yale. It is located on a small island off the coast of Washington in the United States, bordering the Puget Sound, only accessible by ferry, in the town of Cape Foul. Cape Foul was founded in the early 1800s, and Lone Pine was established in 1851. The island is considered to be haunted by many inhabitants of the mainland and the island alike, and plenty of Lone Pine alumni and long-term residents have horror stories involving Ashurst Forest, Bel Air Island, Arietty’s Cove, and the dark and mysterious Montague mansion. Some of the townsfolk are eager— almost too eager— to entertain students. Others seem standoffish at best, and downright hostile at worst. There are secrets to be learned, clues to uncover, and mysteries to solve.
You arrive to the island by ferry. There is only one boat that comes and goes each day, at 5AM, noon, and 7PM. The ferry station on Cape Foul is quaint and quiet, with large bay windows facing the Puget Sound and the far wall covered in layers and layers of missing persons posters. Some of them are decades old, decaying in damp, sea-salt soaked layers as if someone intends to fertilize their garden with the resulting mulch. The University and its namesake, the Lone Pine, tower over the island like watchful guardians, visible even from the shore of the mainland. You cannot be sure, but it almost seems as though the tree itself is calling for you, beckoning you forward, the breeze at your back an indication of its intention to draw you near.
It’s a good thing that the University is your intended destination; you know that you would likely be unable to stop yourself from visiting either way.
