Guest blogger Joyce from Childhood Beckons shares a DIY Penguin Board Game activity!
Learning through play is a fun and effective way for kids to retain knowledge without even realizing it. And a great way to learn through play is by playing games. We’ve been studying penguins this month, so to practice what we were learning I created a homemade penguin trivia game.
I began by creating the game board. I used a piece of foam core poster board, but you could also use a piece of cardboard, regular poster board, or a few pieces of construction paper taped together. I painted the foam core blue and placed other bits of white foam core on top to create icebergs. I didn’t glue these down so we could change it up and use the board for other games in the future.
Next, I created our playing cards. I made these fish cards to write our penguin trivia questions on. If you would like to use this printable for your own penguin board game, just save the above picture and print!
We used the penguins from the Safari Ltd. Penguins TOOB as game pieces and this was, by far, the best aspect of the game.
The object of the game is to move your penguin around the board by answering questions and thereby catching the fish. We used penguin trivia questions to recap what we learned and make it interesting for all of our family.
Each player draws one fish card on their turn and hands it to another player to read. If they answer the question correctly, they get to move ahead one space and the play continues with the next person taking their turn. If they answer it incorrectly, they must stay where they are.
R had a ton of fun moving his choice of penguin around the board. He was very proud of himself when he answered correctly and he delighted in the competition. He loves penguins and the Safari Ltd. Penguins TOOB was an excellent addition to our learning and play.
You don’t have to limit yourself to trivia questions! This penguin board game would be an excellent addition to a polar unit study in a variety of ways. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Teach younger children colors or shapes.
Playfully practice the alphabet.
Have fun with sight words.
