Do you ever get tired of people asking you directly if their character/story is racially ok or not? As a person who reads your blog, it kinda feels like a "read the resources and then be introspective" situation, as well as a "asking the only Black person I know of if its okay to say/do x." Asking off anon so that if you dont want to reply publicly you dont have to; not trying to stir up discource. I guess I would be annoyed if I was in your shoes. ^^;
Sometimes, yeah. I get more annoyed at the evident desire to have a quick Googled answer than I do at being asked. I think some people want me to be Black ChatGPT, and it's sad because if that's how you're treating Black character creation, it shows that you're not really willing to put the energy in to create thoughtfully. And why are you doing it then, you know? Why did you come to the page that's discussing Black character creation in terms of history and culture and context, only to... Just want the quick answer and not put in the work?
I'll answer them because I want people to continue to try. I want to keep the door open. But I do feel like there's this... And it's not just with character creation and antiracism but just a general thing nowadays... People want Instant Gratification. The Answer. Immediately. And that's not how thinking and creation should work. That's now how any of this works. I want to talk to people and help people that are willing to haul some weight and educate themselves.
Like I say it all the time: what happens when you're in a situation and I'm not there to tell you what to do? You just gone be racist, and your excuse is "well no one told me?" Someone DID tell you, they just didn't tell you every permutation of racism ever. They expected you to learn, to extrapolate, and apply. If you're not approaching this with that mentality, you're not going to ever get better at any of this, and my resources are pointless. But guilt can be countered with education!!!
