Hello anon, it’s a story that I daydreamed about to pass the time that turned into a very cute and humble au of mine.

This is a non-wizarding au, but it still has a touch of magic in it. Harry grew up with the Dursley’s and became very good at using his hands. He even persuaded Aunt Petunia into getting him a book on sewing techniques, citing that it would help him mend Dudley’s clothes better for the future. With this book and hunger for knowledge, Harry became a very talented sewist/seamster as the years went on, eventually entering a contest whose grand prize was his ticket out of that horrible home.

The story begins on a train, Harry’s goodbye from the Dursley’s and hello to a brighter future. It’s where he meets Ron and eventually his family whom help him find lodging and a storefront to rent.

As for the magical element of this story, I was inspired by the concept of swan maidens and selkies, where these beautiful mysterious women actually turned out to be magical—a feathered cloak or sealskin that allowed for a dramatic transformation. I wanted to take this concept and combine it with the Ugly Duckling and the Cloak of Invisibility.

In this new town, Harry finds out about his parents and an inheritance that he never knew about. He also meets a dashing blond with the most charming smile and soft silver eyes.

Swan lads and swan maidens are a myth. An old fable. A tale for children to bring them to slumber. There’s no way these feathery swan people exist, it’s hardly worth entertaining the notion.

Draco, equal parts horrified and entertained, snatches Harry’s next glass.

“I’m saving your dignity,” Draco mutters.

Harry points accusingly, “You’re saving it because you like me.”

The table goes quiet. Draco turns crimson. He ends up dragging Harry outside for fresh air, muttering under his breath the entire time.

When Harry rests his head against Draco’s shoulder on the way home, Draco sighs, “You’re insufferable.”

Harry, half-asleep, murmurs, “You love it.”

I wonder how Harry came across such an occupation. Maybe it started from the introduction of an auror calendar? Only for Harry to eventually quit and work as a model full-time? And from there he eventually found his niche as a pin-up model?

I feel like it’s the hallmark of every childhood to own one. Harry might not’ve had the same opportunity, or might not remember any toys James, Lily, Sirius, or Remus had procured for him as a small babe, but it would make for a very fluffy story of him getting his own after the events of the epilogue.

Draco very likely had many stuffed animals to keep him company as a child. Or perhaps even just one that he loved a lot.

I see the “has” in your ask, anon. The present tense intrigues me. Draco still owning a stuffy as an adult? Considering that I myself still own many of my childhood plush companions, I can definitely see this as reigning true for our dear Malfoy.

I wonder what that animal would be—a bear, a rabbit, a lamb? Something magical perhaps? A unicorn or dragon? A niffler with its own set of shiny beads? Maybe a golden snidget, pudgy and oh so lovable!

Maybe Draco is down on his luck after the war, fallen from grace, his family’s belongings seized by the Ministry to pay their debts. Perhaps one of the few remaining items in his possession is soft, well-loved toy…
