I miss it most when people think that like, me not getting visibly angry is a sign that I'm a pushover, or if I lay out a boundary as politely and firmly as possible and I'm told I'm being mean. The urge to be like, "You have no fucking idea how generous I'm being and I'll demonstrate how lucky you've been up until this point" is probably a bigger temptation than the actual trigger for the anger in the first place, and one I find myself falling for much more frequently. I mean, in theory I know that Excel is based on the structure of earlier accounting technology that's been around for hundreds of years -- what do we think we did to track commerce before computers? -- but it still kind of blows my mind to, for example, look at my ancestor's journal from a whaling voyage in 1770 and see spreadsheets in the back.
