With Crowleyâs protest, with Crowleyâs offer, with the fact that she suddenly couldnât seem to find anyone who would serve as adequate distraction, with the fact that there wasnât really anything significant enough to say to what was left of the harmless part of their conversation that could distract from the bigger matter at hand, Renee now found herself in a position she wasnât often in: genuinely speechless. After all, Renee was really best at responding to genuine sentiments with lies. Being herself, responding in kind, that wasnât a well-practiced skill, even as it was absolutely necessary here. Gaze searched Crowleyâs expression looking for the joke, but instead she only saw absolute honesty.
Mouth opened and then shut, silently, as she tried to come up with something to say and found herself still unable to come up with anything, uncomfortable in the idea that she was absolutely vulnerable right now. And yet, instead of scrambling to fix it, mind flashed to an afternoon one-hundred and twenty-two years ago, one where she had prayed to Belial and meant it, to an afternoon where she had naively, blindly believed in him. Could she do that for Crowley? Could she believe like that again, believe enough to pray to her? Did she want to?Â
In answer, mind flashed, then, to a far more recent moment, to Crowley begging her to save herself, to let herself be saved, to stop punishing herself with her own weakness, with the fallacy of attributing everything to Belial, with the idea that there was nothing left for her to do without his backing or the underlying security he gave. She had ruined her phone then, deliberately shattered it rather than listen to Crowleyâs voicemail, but much later, when she finally pulled herself together and started putting everything back together best as could be done, she had realized she had unheard voicemails, forgetting that one of them would be Crowleyâs; sitting there listening to old messages to clear her inbox, that one caught her by surprise, and made her cry. But she had never done anything with that, because what was there to say? She had never found strength in apologizing; it was just easier to pretend she had never heard it at all and hope that Crowley was happy enough to see her back to herself, that she wouldnât have to apologize for disappointing her, for hurting her when that hadnât been the intent behind her choices and instead merely collateral damage.
Silly as it seemed on the surface, as counter as Crowley was to everything she had made herself with her careful games and how controlled she kept her persona as Vice, Renee could believe in Crowley. How could she not? Crowley believed in her when she hadnât even believed in herself. And yet even knowing that, it didnât give an easy answer and she still had to say something, didnât she? Head shook as she went with her gut and asked the one question she couldnât get out of her head, the one thing that she didnât understand no matter which way she looked at it. âHonestly, Crowley, what did I ever do to deserve someone like you in my life or an offer like that? I never tried to manipulate you or charm you or make you like me and yet, youâve done more for me than anyone else Iâve ever met. I donât understand. Youâve never asked for anything in return.â
Everything seemed to pause as Crowley looked at Renee. Once again, she knew the questions that people asked. Why Renee? Why was she so affectionate to the woman? Why did she trust the woman that she shouldnât? God, she knew the stories and the games that Belial and Renee played. How could she not? They were a legend. Belial was someone she could never replace to Renee and nor did she want to. She didnât want to be Reneeâs Belial. She couldnât be her Belial even if she did try. She wanted to be her Crowley. She wasnât so foolish to think that Renee needed a protector or a daughter or a lover. However, Crowley was ready to be whatever Renee needed in the moment. Perhaps it was because Crowley wanted someone similar for herself. She knew what it was like to come from being human and to make something of yourself. Maybe she was foolishly sentimental but it took effort and it was exhausting at times to continuously hold yourself up surrounded by demons always out to get you.Â
Satan, Belial, Abaddon, even Lucifer had no idea what it was to be human. Sure, they might have loved at times and lost at times but there was still something so inhuman about them. Theyâd never know what it would be like to be human, to live and die with beliefs, problems, triumph. Renee knew though. Babylon knew. Perhaps that was why she treasured them so because they knew what it was like to bob and weave their way through the unknown. Renee had lived so many lives and of course, they took their toll on her but she was a figure always emerging from the rubble. She pulled herself up again and again and Crowley wanted to do the same. Crowley wanted that resolve and strength. Her other half had turned out to be the one trying to destroy the world but the woman was still fucking here. Even though it must have killed her, Renee hadnât joined Warâs side even if he did posses the demon that had been her other half for centuries.
It was inspiring. It was rare that Crowley was actually impressed, truly impressed to her core but time and time again, Renee impressed her. She inspired her to continue. Crowley would do everything she possibly could in the days to come - no matter how limited they might be - to make sure that flame in Renee wasnât snuffed out.Â
âI donât want anything in return.â She murmured, pressing her lips together. Her fingers flexed at her side before hanging loosely. âI donât know how to explain it but perhaps it was because you never tried to manipulate me or charm me or make me like you. Youâre just you and Iâm very very fond of you.â She felt exposed but she tilted her chin up, green eyes determined. âAnd I know a demon loving someone is stupid - especially because weâre like a pack of dogs looking for weaknesses in each other.â She couldnât help but add. So many demons believed attachments were weakness - she had been one of them once - but Crowley had quietly learned that people were a source of strength. They would die and God, it would hurt worse than anything and so many things could go wrong (her heart still hurt over the Magda and Gabriel thing) but here she was, standing down the apocalypse because of those people she loved. Magda, Babylon, Renee, the lost Kezia. She stood for them. âbut you are one of the few people I do treasure and for that, that is all I will ever need from you. â
