So inspired by you taking an adult swim class! I really wish there was one I could take. I always feel so awkward about not being able to swim. I can float and doggy paddle a bit but deep water terrifies me. But I'm so proud of you!! Seriously bursting at the thought of having as much bravery as you. (Also, I love your art). 💜
thank you on both fronts :] i hope you can find a program to help you learn more!
a few weeks into my adult swim class i am seeing a major disparity in the class regarding what we consider beginner level swimming...... most of the class is at the "swimming across the shallow end of the pool unassisted" level meanwhile me and denise are still working on like putting our face in the water and not touching the ground.
I used to teach swimming lessons (mostly to kids) and learning to put your face in the water and breathe while swimming and not touching the ground is one of the most challenging things to teach/learn. It's super scary if you aren't used to it. Folks who are used to it might do it automatically without having to think too much but that shit is hard! It takes a lot of trust in your own abilities.
From my experience beginner swim classes with folks above the age of 13 usually have a wide variety of student abilities. All the beginner students just tend to get lumped together because of low staffing.
Lastly there's no shame in taking your time to learn how to swim! Of course It's good to push yourself outside your comfort zone a little. But I've seen students become terrified after one scary experience and it ruins the whole activity of swimming for them. So my best advice is to take it slow, build trust, and enjoy yourself!
thank you for the reassurance!! trying to push off/straighten out/maintain position/exhale all at once is like some crazy rub your belly and pat your head exercise for me. i'm glad i'm at least not the only one in the group that is at the same skill level, but it still can be frustrating to feel like everyone is Getting it faster than me. i'm hoping to get registered for another semi-private swimming lesson program later this year bc i for sure require more attention than this class can give - boo understaffing.
