Are You Hungry?
In the end of the year infaltion was one of the biggest topics by the news. We made with two colleges of me a research, and analysed the data by one factual person (me). I have had the bills of my daily shopping from 2019 till today, and my shopping were the quelle of the prises to see, how many inflations I really have had from 2019 until 1. April 2022 in Germany. To the projects I made the visualisation of the datas and take pictures in the Studio. On the pictures you can see, how many product you could buy for the prises of 2019. In 2017, after seventeen years of hiatus the Steel Sculptor Workshop in Dunaújváros, Hungary has been organized again with tree emerging artists, Kitti Gosztola, Tamás Kaszás and Péter Szalay. The local workshop had always been an important event of the cultural life first in Hungary, then in the broader Middle-European scale from 1974 till 2000. In course of time this unique artist residency program became an international phenomenon and many artists participated in it from the USA to Japan. The collection of their works consists of more than fifty large-scale steel sculptures and they are displayed in one of the largest European open-air sculpture parks alongside the Danube.
The Dunaferr-Art Dunaújváros Foundation, head of the board and artist Gyula Várnai with local art historian Annamária Nagy were able to organize a new workshop in 2017 after four years of planning and seeking after sponsorship. The invited artists had the chance to design and materialize three sculptures each, with the help of the employees of the metallurgical factory, ISD Dunaferr. What makes this collaboration even more interesting is that many of the workers had assisted artists during the former workshops, and remembered the course and the challenges of making the sculptures with the given industrial technologies. The newly revived workshop did not bring large-scale monuments, thus the outcome moved to the town’s exhibition hall instead of the riverside. I followed the artists from their first day in the factory until the opening night.
FIGHT CLUB
„The first rule of the Fight Club is that you do not talk about the Fight Club”
Dunaújváros is a small, post-socialist town in the middle of Hungary. Here, in addition to the architecture of the city and to the daily work of the metallurgical factory, sport is also really important for the people. The local Women’s Water Polo Club (hereafter DFVE) is amongst the best female water polo teams on the European level, however the life of the athletes is much harder and more complex than the fans and visitors could see. As human beings, they also have emotional issues and they work really hard, like a family, hour by hour and day by day. The most important thing is to win the next game and to reach the team’s goals throughout the season. To do so, „the first rule of Fight Club is that you do not talk about Fight Club.” Water polo is not a lovely sport, the fights are visible even from the side of the pool, although nobody likes to speak about the injuries, neither the fans, and specially not the players. The girls’ time-table is full from Monday to Saturday (sometimes on Sundays as well) with training and matches. There is no time and place for an injury simply because they cannot afford to stay at home and fall out of shape. General view of the athletes is that they pay the price of success with injuries and pain, and the players of DVFE are not exceptions. “No pain, no gain” – it is as simple as that. In case one gets injured even so, they take the shortest time possible to heal and come back as soon as it is medically allowed.

UTOPIA Project Architecture - photo montages
Four faces of Alex
Restrooms
Dunaújváros was planned as the town of perfect socialist utopia. The life of the citizens and the city itself was controlled by the factory and hard work. Although the political system has changed in 1990, the factory and the town have stayed the same for the upcoming decades.
I have been working for the Dunaferr ISD Ironworks as a photojournalist since 2003, and later on I have begun to shoot the workers and the resting places on my own. Most of the citizens haven’t seen the factory from the inside so they can’t imagine what it actually looks like. My idea is to show the working people through their resting places, because these areas can tell many stories about the factory.
