As the name and managing partner of Upland & Associates, Gavin North has always been a high profile citizen of Peller's town. While he runs a small law firm, it is one of the few cornerstones of the town. His reputation as a lawyer is a rather good one. His skill in the courtroom rarely has anything to do with knowledge of the case or finesse with the law, but more about painting a picture to a jury, getting them on his side, and getting a verdict out of them. He will only take cases he believes in. If it's someone he honestly thinks is innocent, or if he's suing a company he genuinely thinks is in the wrong, he will do whatever he can to wink the case. He's even been known to take cases pro bono from time to time. At the end of the day, however, he comes from "old money", and a lot of it. When he's not winning cases, he's been known to throw charitable galas and fundraisers to support the community, and will most certainly post about it all over social media. As much of a philanthropist as he is, he makes sure everyone knows it. He's spent his life building up his public perception, both professionally and socially, to the point he finds it hard to find genuine moments with the people in town. Born into a noble Gillikinese family in the northern border of Oz, Galindan Arduenna of the Uplands always knew he was destined for greatness, he'd been told as much for as far back as he can remember. His mother, Lorena Upland, a descendant of the noble clan of Upland, was his family's main source of wealth and nobility, a fact he'd always been quick to exploit whenever it benefited him. He's gone so far as to take his mother's maiden name in addition to his father's just so he'd be identified on sight as an Upland. Growing up, title and status was always important to him, as it was for most of the Gillikinese. Because of that, and because he was his parent's only child, he was pressured since the moment he hit puberty to start searching for a match. While he'd never really been considered the smartest child, even by Giliken standards, he was handsome, and he was charming, so of course marrying was his soul purpose in life, right? Well not as far as Galindan was concerned. While he may not have been seen as the brightest jewel on the wand, he was nothing if not ambitious. What he lacked in book knowledge, he made up for in raw talent and determination. So, while he was surrounded by boys and girls practicing their dances, learning how to dress, and brushing up on social etiquette… well he was doing all that too of course, but he'd also discovered a love for sorcery. He'd convinced his parents to send him to Shiz University to study. While it was under the guise that he would find a spouse there, his true plan was to study sorcery and become one of the post powerful Witches in Oz. If he met and fell in love with a handsome prince along the way, so be it. His experience at Shiz was a bit of a mixed bag. Popularity came naturally to him, as it always had. If he really had come to Shiz to simply fall in love and get married, he wouldn't have had any issue. The art of sorcery, however, didn't come as easily. His frustration was only amplified by his insufferable roommate who seemed to be able to wield magic as easily as breathing. Powerful magic too! His relationship with the Thropp boy was complicated from the start, and definitely changed the trajectory of not only his life, but his outlook on it in general. His time at Shiz, while impactful, was certainly a traumatic experience, so much so that he ended up changing his name, his identity. He would no longer go by Galindan Arduenna-Upland of the Uplands. After leaving school, and shedding that naive persona he'd been forced to grow out of, he would hence forth be known to everyone as: Glindan Arduenna-Upland of the Uplands. As luck would have it, everything that Glindan strived for when going to school fell into his lap. While his previous roommate ran into some trouble with the law and was forced to leave school, he was able to focus on his studies, to eventually harness his power, and become a sorcerer in his own right. He was personally tutored by the school's sorcery head, and as time went on, not only his power, but his reputation grew. While his parents were admittedly disappointed that he didn't return home with a spouse, coming home as The Witch of the North was an honorific they reveled in. Over the years, Glindan's work with various charities all throughout Oz, his strong political presence in support of the Wizard, and his social influence over all, earned him the title of The Good Witch of the North. He's known for using his magic to heal and inspire his fellow Ozians, a much needed respite from the wickedness from the west. It didn't take long for him win the hearts of the people all across Oz, a position he reveled in. Even as Oz is thrown into chaos and turmoil, the people look to him for not only leadership, but support and strength.
