i went on this big walk, i was really sad and stressed out about a lot of things. i was in the back of a cab (listening to Higher by Rihanna).
it's about that feeling of being too much. for someone. for everyone, for the world. and it's the most crushing feeling, the feeling of someone not wanting you.
when i wrote it, i was feeling particularly kind of me against the world, i was feeling very isolated and lonely. you have to kind of learn to be your best mate, you gotta work it out because everyone else is probably gonna leave you at some point, but you'll always be there for yourself. that was a real lesson that i learned, to really take care of myself.
you know that feeling when you walk into a room and you feel like you must have a giant body, giant feet and hands, cause everyone stares at you. "what's wrong with me?" i feel like that all the time. if someone ever makes you feel like you're a bit of a punishment to be around or that you are taking too much space, fuck 'em. cause you're awesome.
a song about this very specific feeling of knowing you're gonna need to learn to be your best friend because everyone's gonna leave you at some point. it sounds terrible, but it's kinda true. if you can be alone in a room with yourself and have that be enough, you're in the right place.
this song i wrote for myself.
i wrote it about that bottomless pit feeling of being the biggest loser you know and how you feel like people don't wanna hang out with you.
i guess it's about feeling like people don't like you very much. or feeling like you're a bit annoying, a bit of pain. and it's ok to feel like that sometimes.
about feeling alone and feeling like you're always gonna be too much for everyone, and it's not true. you're not too much to everyone.
this song is about being alone and learning how to be alone for the first time.
some of the most precious time that i've had is that time after you stopped being with somebody who you've been for a long time. and it sucks a lot of the time. but inbetween the sucking it's a really precious moment.
writing this song helped me celebrate being too much.
it's a song about intense loneliness and being deserted by a lot of people that you love, which is very melodrama. that kind of loneliness is so transformative, it picks you up and it shows you parts of yourself that you didn't know existed. and it shows you how much you can be your company. what a precious thing that is.
what you learn from being alone and heartbroken, you'll gain and you'll grow and you'll be so much stronger on the other side. if anyone says you're not perfect, fuck 'em.
feeling like no one could ever love me for who i am, for all i am.
i am such a big, intense, colorful, melodramatic fucking dreamer.
feeling alone is so life-altering. it's the worst feeling. just to sit in your bedroom and feel the silence boucing off the walls and you just feel like "i could never be sadder than that". it's almost profound. what I think is incredible about that feeling is to get out of it you have to learn how to be OK to hang out by yourself, you have to learn how to respect yourself, how to love yourself.
i thought for a long time, when i would meet people, i'd have to hide a part of myself, i'd have to conceal some of that bright colors, so i wouldn't scare people off. [...] i realised you gotta just be your own best friend.
