it’s not that i don’t disagree with dismissing alison weir based on the “tendentious horseshit” she’s put out semi-recently (among several, probably the most glaring— and sadly deleted read of that “”—being that anne of cleves was not only not a virgin when she married hviii, but that she had given birth to an illegitimate child prior to the marriage); it’s that…she has been putting out tendentious horseshit since she stepped onto the scene. and that it is a very sad indictment on the standards of the reading public that she has remained as popular as she has.
in her 2001 biography of hviii, she claimed that anne boleyn was pregnant april-may 1536 and that hviii and cromwell were aware of it. that alone should have been a career-ender.

what’s your thoughts on some of the character reveals and plots reveals in the max king play?
Well, I'm trying to keep my expectations reasonable, for a start.
Secondhand description of live theatre performances is a genre of writing I'm very familiar with, having both relied on them and produced them for myself, sometimes in excruciating yet incomprehensible detail because that's what you get for trying to write down everything that happened while people are climbing over you to get in and out of their seats during the interval. That being said, I was still able to use my roughly 30 pages of hysterical notes on the 2008-2009 Histories Cycle when working on the Henry VI, Part 2 introduction, so I'm actually rather proud of my grad school self.
(Can we tell I miss the theatre? I also miss the energy I had in my 20s to watch seven shows in a single weekend running on coffee and Boots sandwiches.)
Anyway.
Based on what I've read, it sounds like they have crammed an enormous amount of plot into a single play and my hat is off to Duncan Macmillan for even attempting to do in four hours what took me 155,000 words on AO3.
I desperately want to see it.
Barring that, I want to read the script. Truth be told, I want to EDIT the script when they eventually publish it. My footnotes would be magnificent.
(I will admit that DM and I seem to be hanging out on the same wavelength, though if you did read my fic, Duncan, please tell me so I can live off those endorphins for the rest of my life.)
Normally, they'd have a full synopsis of both acts in the programme, but they don't appear to have one for this play. I guess because GRRM, unlike Shakespeare, can be spoiled. So I'm waiting until a proper synopsis appears before I say anything in detail.
However, I want to rant about one thing that is not plot-related.
I would certainly have written a better contextual essay than Dan Fucking Jones, who managed to write an entire essay comparing Charles VI of France to Aerys II without even once mentioning the bal des ardents, let alone including the fabulous illumination from Froissart. What sort of ASOIAF-adjacent medievalist are you, sir? (A piss-poor one, obviously.)
But he's a macho man who writes about macho men so of course they want him for this play. I'll just grumble in the corner about mediocre white men in academia. There are easily a dozen other historians who would do better, if the fact that I'm not technically a historian is a problem. Yes, I know it's a petty thing to be annoyed about, but it's my blog and I can gripe if I want to.
