IT  ISN’T  FAIR ,  SHIORI  THINKS ,  FOR  her  sister  to  be  so  nonchalant  like  this.  a  year  apart  (  a  year ,  a  year  without  her  sister  who  had  remained  by  her  side  from  the  first  day ,  was  sorrow  &  torture  all  bled  into  one  )  &  to  suddenly  see  her  across  the  stage  in  a  revue  is  one  thing ;  for  her  to  act  like  nothing  had  happened ...

...  well ,  she  wasn’t  the  only  one  who  had  changed.

a  hand  swats  her sister’s  away ,  already  moving  back  as  shiori  raises  her  saber.  “  i’m  not  five  anymore ,  ”  she  says ,  fury  in  her  tone  but  fear  in  her  heart ,  a  tremble  in  her  hands.  can  she  do  this ?  can  she  fight  her  sister ?  siegfeld’s  honor  is  on  the  line  ,  though ,  she ,  as  frau  jade ,  must ─

her  sister  was  frau  jade  too ,  once.  &  she  had  left  for  shiori  to  pick  up  the  shattered  pieces  of  honor ,  she  had  left  her.  the  betrayal  sinks  deeper  into  her  gut  &  steadies  her  hand ,  hardens  her  gaze.  shiori  had  found  another  home  in  siegfeld ,  one  she  would  protect.

siegfeld’s  honor  is  on  the  line ,  she  reminds  herself ,  &  her  duty  to  uphold  the  name  remains.  “  don’t  you  know  where  we  are ,  or  did  running  away  make  you  forget  of  your  duty  to  the  audience ,  onee-chan  ─  no ,  fumi ?  ”  on  a  stage  meant  to  please  the  stars ,  to  save  what  is  precious ,

she  raises  her  voice ,  her  cry  echoing  off  the  curtains.  “  this  is  a  revue !  &  i  will  not  lose  today !  not  to  anyone ,  &  especially  not  to  you !  ”
