I think Big Boss and EVA is the best romance Kojima did in his entire career as of now. Though I do consider it criminal that they never got to meet each other in MGS4 in one way or another. At the very least it could have been done in a way how you can see spirits of Boss and Sorrow in MGS3 from first person view. That would've been peak conclusion for both of them, especially if you got to see them from Solid Snake's first person point of view at the graveyard in the end.
However, just in a vacuum of Snake Eater, John and EVA are well developed romance that blooms on a battlefield, so to speak.
People who try to diminish romance because "it was just one game/it is unrealistic to fall in love in a few days/etc" should shut the hell up and stop using real life "rules" when talking about fiction. Fiction is fiction because anything is possible there, falling in love at the first sight included. Big Boss and EVA work in the setting and story of MGS3 and that's all that matters.
