A Sad Kinky Nerd

With June being pride month AND The Amazing Digital Circus’s Last Act coming to theaters on Thursday (I’m not emotionally prepared guys) I thought it would be fun for us as fans to talk about and ponder the sexuality of everyone’s favorite complex purple bunny 💜

I would first like to state up front that I am a ride or die FunnyBunny shipper and nothing will ever truly change that about me. Jax and Pomni’s chemistry together is just far too strong for me to imagine him with anyone else in my completely subjective opinion. That being said there is however one other character that is just as important to Jax as Pomni and they also happen to be just as mysterious as Jax’s own backstory. Of course I am talking about the enigmatic frog that has been haunting the narrative for quite some time now…

There is a pretty popular fan theory out there that the reason Jax got so attached to Pomni in the first place is because she reminded him so much of Ribbit. I fell in love with this piece of fanon the moment I first saw it because it just makes sense considering Gooseworx has said that originally Pomni’s design was going to be a frog until she became the baddie jester that we all know and love currently. Jax’s relationship with Ribbit takes on far deeper importance when viewing this fan theory through a FunnyBunny lense as it makes it all the more beautiful and heartbreaking simultaneously. Ultimately what I’m trying to say is that FunnyBunny and RibbitRabbit can very happily coexist and both ships arguably strengthen one another.

Now you are probably wondering what all this talk of FunnyBunny and RibbitRabbit has anything to do with Jax’s sexuality right? Well for one if we go by Ribbit’s canon pronouns ‘She/They’ we can already see that Jax is not as heterosexual as he would like everyone to believe he is. He's obsessed with everyone viewing him as a typical masculine dude with his craving for violence and destruction, saying things like “Slice of life animes are the worst”, and makes remarks like “Man Up!” And “This is what peak male performance looks like” and even jokes about Zooble's sexuality numerous times in the show. With all that being said I would like to point out some small things like the fact that despite all of Jax’s semi-homophobic jokes he makes towards Zooble he still actively refers to them by their chosen pronouns, and his room appears far more feminine than one would expect almost as if it’s reflecting an aspect of himself that he’s not fond of.

So what does all this mean? If we could cast canon out the window for the sake of my own AU fanon that Im rather fond of and don’t see explored as much as I would like…

Back before Gooseworx confirmed Ribbit's gender, I was not so secretly hoping that it would turn out Ribbit was actually He/Him and Jax was starting to develop romantic feelings for Ribbit, which is the deeper reason why Ribbit's abstraction hurt Jax so deeply and damaged him in the way we see him now.

It is my personal headcanon that Jax is not only dealing with his trauma through a self destructive form of coping where he refuses to allow people to get too close to him for fear of growing attached only for him to lose them like he did Ribbit, but he is also incredibly insecure about his own sexual identity and the feelings he developed for Ribbit prior to his abstraction. It’s why he gets so annoyed at seeing the timid softness of 'evil' Jax and gets so flustered and angry when Gangle votes to put him in the maid dress. Not to mention his reaction when Zooble flips his “Seems fitting for you though. I thought you would be into this.” line on him as well as all of the other observations about him that I have made throughout this post.

The idea that Jax is deeply closeted and having internalized homophobia because of his own past with Ribbit and the same sex attraction he felt toward him would fit in with his character so much that I'm genuinely shocked it's not canon. At the very least it's a fun little AU reading of Jax that I would love to see people explore more. Anyway, That’s enough of my rambling. This post exploded into something bigger than I first thought when I sat down to write it XD
