Our Index begins in the gaps where language ends; that is in the records of absence and absences of records where official language fails and new language must be developed in its place explain Chitra Ganesh and Marian Ghani, the 2013-2014 A/P/A Artists-in-residence, whose installation Index of the Disappeared: Secrets told is on view at A/P/A Institute Gallery. On Thursday, March 12, Ghani will guide guests through the installation during at reception at the A/P/A Institute gallery.

Mithu Sen: Border Unseen Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum East Lansing, MI

Mithu Sen: Border Unseen is the first solo U.S. museum exhibition featuring the work of Mithu Sen (b. 1971, West Bengal, India), a New Delhi-based artist who stands as a crucial feminist voice in contemporary Indian art. Sen rose to prominence in the last decade for creating sensual and grotesque representations of the human body, animals, and inanimate objects that seethe with undercurrents of irony and wit. Her drawings, sculptures, and installations push the limits of acceptable artistic language and subject matter, often upending conventional approaches to gender and sexuality by exploring the connotations of bodily materials such as hair, teeth and bones. In 2010 Sen was awarded the Škoda Prize for Contemporary Indian Art for her series of large-scale drawings Black Candy (iforgotmypenisathome), which explore homoerotic narratives of masculinity.

Nalini Malani: Transgressions Asia Society New York

Nalini Malani's considered one of the foremost artists from India today. She was born in 1946 in Karachi before the 1947 Partition of India and was trained as a painter at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai (1964–1969). Malani became known as a pioneer in India in the 1980s for her attention to feminist issues, and later in the early 1990s for her innovative theater and installation projects. Her multimedia projects feature recurring themes around the subjects of gender, memory, race, and transnational politics, especially in reference to India’s postcolonial history after independence and partition. The artist often draws upon stories from Hindu and Greek mythology, nineteenth-century literary nonsense writing by such authors as Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, and early-twentieth-century experimental theater to create allegories for present day events.

This group exhibition brings together artists born between 1947 and 1957. This bracket of time has been intentionally selected to study work made by women artists born in the postwar, post-Partition era who engage with a political framework that addresses concepts of nationalism, institutions, and questions of their own positions by creating complex interpretations. These artists have practices that enter and depart from dialogues with but are not positioned within Western canonical frames such as Modernism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Pop, Performance Art, or the even the Feminist movement of the 1970s; they are the “in-between”, sitting alongside but very much present. This ‘instability’ is due to the nature of their work, choice of media and the concerns that have run through their practice; there is a dominance of conceptual strategy and thinking, and ultimately, they are both working with and against the possibility of ‘joining’.

''Open eye policy'' Sheela Gowda 19 January-16 March 2014

The Centre international d’art et du paysage is delighted to welcome artist Sheela Gowda (b. 1957, Bhadravati, lives in Bangalore) for her first solo exhibition in France: ‘‘Open Eye Policy’’, a travelling project initiated by the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (curators: Annie Fletcher and Grant Watson), brings together twenty years of large installations, sculptures and photographs.

Hamra Abbas: Wall Hanging INOVEMBER 2013-APRIL 2014 | NEW WING FAÇADE

Hamra Abbas’s art installation on the front of the Gardner Museum shows the spectacular silk and gold curtain (kiswa) that covers the door of the Kaaba in Mecca, Islam’s holiest and most venerated site. The artist was inspired by a small plaster cast of this object displayed in her mother’s house in Lahore, Pakistan. Creating a version of this quintessential Islamic image for her adopted city of Boston, the artist seeks to diffuse the prevailing tension between East and West by bringing visitors in contact with the unfamiliar through visual art.

Pace presents the first exhibition of Indian-born, London-based artist Raqib Shaw. Known for his opulent paintings and sculptures, Shaw creates shimmering, jewel-like surfaces, which often use dark images drawn from ancient myths from both Eastern and Western tradition. Featuring new paintings and sculptures, the show will span all three of Pace’s galleries on 25th Street.
