DiY or DiE
I look at a band like Spraynard and think, “Wow! How in the hell does a local band become so ‘big’?” Then it hits me a. They write really awesome and upbeat songs and play them very well. b. they are super positive, motivated, and really nice guys that are passionate about what they do. c. They belong to a strong supportive community with diehard fans that all look out for each other. d. All of the above.
The answer is obviously (d.)
And then I think back over my long and extensive history of being involved in music and I’ve seen a ton of bands struggling to catch their big break. Most of them are really good at what they do, they right awesome songs, they are passionate about what they do but they just can’t seem to catch a part of the dream. So what’s missing?
Answer c.

Although I’ve been I’n the music scene for nearly 20 years now, I’ve only been recently introduced to the DiY scene. Inside this network I see a ton of creative people all working together to build this underground network that can basically move mountains.
They are booking their own events, recording their own music, putting out their own records, funding their own tours and… Well, actually being successful!
Now we all know the term successful is very debatable. A lot of people are quick to associate it with financial figures. And that’s where they are wrong. That’s what separates the two worlds. People doing it for money and people doing it for passion. If the world was paid in passion, think of how wonderful it would be.
If I book a show with my band in support of a touring band. We meet, hang out, eat pizza, tell jokes, share stories, and then play our music together, I don’t even consider how much we got paid, how many people came through the door. If the vibes were good then it was a success.
And that mentality is what drives the DiY scene. Of course, most of the time, we all shuck out some dollars, combined with what door money is there and buying all the 7”s and beer koozies to make sure the band gets to the next town. And then I always hear in the end about how their tour was such a success.
Slide your attention to the rock bands that just played local so and so’s for the third time this spring and you hear them bitch about how no one came out and the scene’s not supportive and they don’t make any money on cd sales etc etc. One thing comes to mind is how many cd’s do you think you can move to the same crowd over and over again plus who the hell buys cd’s any more any way?
The point is, what determines if your band becomes successful is kinda determined by what your idea of success is. And from what I see, the bands that find that success in community often earn themselves more opportunity. Bands like The Menzingers, The Holy Mess, Direct Hit!, Spraynard… All building themselves from the supporting DiY community and using that energy to sling shot themselves into the bigger leagues.
Chances are these bands don’t even see themselves as successful as their fans do. My observation and opinion is that bands that build a solid foundation within the DiY community by achieving all the characteristics in answer (d.) earn themselves a place in the industry.
And for whatever your idea of success measures out to be, it really makes me happy to be a part of this community and I consider myself on the right path to success.

"From the millscapes of Mexico, Maine" comes Buddusky. A dynamic duo with obvious influences reaching from the mid 80's DC post-hardcore( Rites of Spring) to the more recognizable mid 90's ambient shoe gaze( Hum/ Modest Mouse). Buddusky has a routed out a peppered trail along the east coast this summer to promote their newest release, "Two of Something" and will be stopping by 1984 Barcade in Wilmington DE tomorrow night, Saturday May 24, with Seeing Snakes(Philly) & Strawman(Wilmo). The Holy Mess' SteveO has an incredible solo project going on called Foul Weathered Friend. UK label,Cats? Aye! Somehow, I got myself slated for a show with SteveO next month in Philly for my Cody Lynch & Trash Boat Summer Weekend Walkabout Tour and I can't be more excited. GODDAMNIT announced for RASFFest. I'm super pumped that Philadelphia's GODDAMNIT is the first band I get to announce for Really Awesome Super Fun Fest. I've booked them to play several shows in Wilmington and the past and they always seem to impress me more and more with each show.
