What students want...
The following is data gathered from research conducted by the FinalsClub Foundation. Â Please steal any and all ideas you find within!
The following information is based on quantitative survey data gathered by the FinalsClub Foundation in 2014.  Each study included more than 200 responses from student at a range of two-year and four-year US colleges.  On average these were high-achieving students with more than 75% self-reporting a GPA between 3.1 and 4.0.  The most common academic descriptors respondents chose for themselves included  âstudiousâ (21%), âinquisitiveâ (20%), and ârelaxedâ (24%).  Itâs also worth noting that our survey population was 59% female.
Video-based learning (December, 2013)
Hypothesis: We ran our first survey to discover whether students desired technology to create a condensed version of college lecture videos to help them study.
Results: Of students polled, 69% reported that none of their courses that semester had lecture videos available. Â In addition 88% of student respondents reported attending more than three quarters of their lectures each semester. Â When students did miss lecture, the most common reason was illness (35%) followed by scheduling conflicts (23%). Â When students did attend lecture, 79% reported that they took lecture notes "often" or "always." Â Shockingly, 74% of respondents "never watched lecture videos," inclusive of instances where they were unavailable.
With respect to video-based lectures, 52% of respondents reported they had never watched a lecture video online, while only 6% reported watching lecture videos often. Â The most common reason for watching lecture video was "absence due to illness" and when "enrolled in an online course."
The tools and resources students wish they had available included "more affordable textbooks" (80%), "a website of high quality notes" (54%), "a mobile app for displaying flashcards" (45%), and "more lecture videos for my courses" (37%). In response to a query of whether they wished they had "a video highlight reel of my lectures," only 29% indicated interest (note: this question was multiple answer format). Â
Conclusion: Instead of building tools around lecture videos, we decided to investigate how students study together.
Study Groups & Learning Resources (January, 2014)
Hypothesis: Study groups are optimal environments for students to learn together. Â We wanted to determine demand for tools to help students organize study groups more effectively.
Results: When asked about the frequency of their participation in study groups, the majority of responded âneverâ (25%) and âonly once or twiceâ (41%). Â Only 11% of respondents reported frequent participation in study groups. Â Although 54% admitted that they âlearn more when studying with their peers,â most claimed not to participate in study groups, because âscheduling is difficultâ (58%). Â However, 39% also reported that they simply âprefer to study alone.â
When asked about âthe most useful tools for studying when in a group or alone,â respondents answered âflashcardsâ (36%) and âmock quizzes and questionsâ (31%). Â We also asked about the top resources âyou most often WISHED you had access to.â Â Again the most common answers were âmock quizzes and questionsâ (54%) and âold exam questionsâ (48%).
Conclusion: Although students indicated an interest in tools to help them study together, the frequency that top-performing students indicated a preference for studying alone, suggested we ought to focus our development energy on the desire for quiz content.
Quiz and Flashcard Usage (February 2014)
Hypothesis: The majority of students in our previous studies indicated a desire for more formative quiz content to aid self-study. Â We wanted to determine the precise features they desired to facilitate self-study with quiz materials.
Results: When asked how often they created flashcards, mock quizzes, or outlines for their college courses, most respondents indicated they do so âoccasionallyâ (42%) with a significant portion reporting they do so âfrequentlyâ (26%).
When asked whether they âask their peers to shareâ flashcards, quizzes, and outlines in anticipation of an exam, 62% reported that they had never asked a friend for study aids, while 32% reported that they had asked occasionally. Â Although students are reluctant to ask their friends for resources, 70% reported that they âwould be willing to share if someone asked them.â
When we asked how useful they might find a website that automatically created flashcards and quizzes from student notes, nearly every student thought this would be a useful site, specifically 45% reported it would be âvery usefulâ and 44% said âsomewhat useful.â Â Moreover, 36% of students said they would âdefinitelyâ upload their notes to a website that automatically converted them to flashcards and quizzes. Â That number increased to 79% participation in the hypothetical situation if âa professor offered the opportunity to earn extra credit for sharing resources.â
Conclusion: We built a prototype for algorithmic quiz-generation on KarmaNotes.org for our top-rated notes. Â This feature is now live on KarmaNotes.
