And yet, somehow, something about Rosie's story felt off.
Oh and after spending some time playing other, newer life sims as well as recently having rediscovered my love for Sims 2, I think I realised why sims 4 is often on my last nerve and there's actually multiple reasons.
For one, they're just...doing too much.
I don't know how to describe it, but both inzoi and paralives have lovely animations (as does sims 2, actually). And yes, they don't take themselves too seriously either, but they allow themselves some sincerety, which just isn't really a thing in sims 4 anymore. I miss the small sincereties between the silliness. Sims 4 is 90% silly, 10% 'oh damn that was actually cute'.
At the same time, there's just the little sprinkles of je ne sais quoi that are missing.
Like being able to water houseplants, the zoi's automatically using a hair dryer after a shower, sims actually using the cupboards to get utensils out, the sim children happily running to their parents after getting a good grade and just the overall love by the team sprinkled into the game.
You know, stuff that isn't strictly necessary but shows that someone was paying attention. Enough to be like 'hihi, I'm gonna do this. It's dumb but I want to'.
Even paralives, which is still really bare bones, is already showing signs of this which is partially why it reminds me so much of how it felt to play sims 2.
AND I think I have a theory why sims 4 doesn't do this anymore? And I'm totally just spitballing but has anyone noticed in, like, ever that sims 4 is, in many places, unnecessarily complicated?
I think gardening in inzoi made me first realise this.
Cos I HATE gardening in sims 4. I hate it with a passion. I'd rather clean and not have a maid than not have a gardener. It's annoying, there's ten thousand steps, I hate it.
In inzoi, it's SO EASY.
And then I remembered that in sims 2 it also really wasn't hard to garden at all. Like not at all at all at all. Why the fuck does it have to be so annoying in sims 4? Like, why do I have to pick which fertiliser? Why is this even an option? I don't fucking care, just fertilise it!
This sort of stuff happens all the time in sims 4.
Doing laundry? The most annoying bullshit. Why do I have to put the wash in and then click another time for it to actually wash. Why isn't this automatically?
And and and - why the FUCK isn't there a 'make many' option? Why the fuck can't I make many servo parts and the sim will just keep doing it? WHY do I need to click this shit for every. single. fucking. thing.? You can't even queue them up, they'll just get auto cancelled!
This just red-threads it's way through the entire game.
Everything has a million steps - collect this, farm that, do this, click this, no you can't click 'make many', no this food will not fill you up entirely you'll have to spend seven sim hours eating fifty bowls of it, no you can't do this without catching this very obscure fish that only appears when the stars align, yes we could've made this action included but instead we've decided to unnecessarily bloat the pie menu by giving you the button to do it yourself.
If I click 'play hide and seek', just go fucking play. I don't want to do the seeking, just go play and leave me the hell alone.
It's like they were going for a stardew valley / animal crossing life sim hybrid and not sims.
And I do honestly think if they'd made the game less bloated by removing some of these extra steps and 'options' that nobody fucking asked for, they could've focused on adding the little sprinkles of love in that the older games had.
I honestly would've preferred that over having to micromanage every single fucking thing the sim does.
