Hi, you seem very well informed and well rounded. Do you know of any books for college students wanting to major in social work? Id like to specialize either in community work or working with youth who have mental illnesses and their families.
That was actually my other major, I don’t talk about it much but social work is a great choice. Many of the book recommendations will be given to you, BSW really focuses on a broad view of social work. You’ll be encourage to identify a population (specialization) but you’ll be learning about several other ones. You may fall in love with something else! There are some things that would be useful to learn before starting, though:
Familiarize yourself with Intersectionality, its origins and purpose: I’d recommend Audre Lorde’s “Sister Outsider.” The term was coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in a paper for the University of Chicago legal firm. They will bring it up all the time.
Some other terms that will come up: Cultural competence, Strengthe perspective, Assimilation/Acculturation, Micro/Macro/Mezzo, etc. I feel you may be able to google “BSW terms” and familiarize yourself so it’s not overwhelming.
You’re going to want to stay updated on what’s being discussed on the NASW website. Also memorize the NASW (1973) definition of Social Work. You should also memorize the core values of social work [I used the acronym DIISSC to help me remember]. I don’t know if all programs do this, but mine was very serious about reciting those on command.
Child development and child maltreatment books will help a lot if that’s the population you plan to work with. Many of this will be taught in your HBSE course anyway, but it’s good to familiarize yourself beforehand.
My favorite Child Development books are: How To Talk So Kids Will Listen, and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish | Gentle Discipline: Using Emotional Connection — Not Punishment — to Raise Confident, Capable Kids by Sarah Ockwell Smith. | The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind, by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson

Skeleton stuff. Obsessed with printing out my notes!! I’ve had way too little time to study lately… taking all the shifts I can get at work. Stressed out, but ya gurl needs to get those coins💰

do you have/know any resources(outside of duolingo/etc) that teach french in spanish?
Books:
Assimil - Francés sin esfuerzo + (Audio files)
Curso de francés
Francés para dummies
Gramática francesa
Gramática de la lengua francesa
Learning French from Spanish and Spanish from French (I don’t have a pdf but this seems pretty useful)
Apps:
Babbel
Beelinguapp
Clozemaster
Drops
Flowlingo
Memrise
There are more things out there, but as I’ve not studied French, I can’t say what they are. If anyone has any recs, please write them below :)

Stop talking yourself out of opportunities because you don’t feel like you’re “ready” yet. It’s time. You’re ready now.
I love adding to my personal library 📚
it takes years to develop your craft. do not romanticize the idea of an ‘overnight success’. be a student. grow organically. get really good. hate your work. start over. find new ways to express the same ideas. the student becomes the master. your time will come.
not to sound hippie, but sometimes you really have to pick yourself up if you want to get better or do better. So much of your future is up to you, what YOU decide to do with your time, what YOU decide to practice and preach. Standing behind jealous of the people with drive or the people going places won’t do anything but leave you bitter. Sometimes you’ve literally got to look at where you are, whether you’re crying, lonely, upset with your progress or whatever, mentally brush yourself off, make a game plan and set off!

There are no great secrets. To become world class, you have to do the work. The highest pay-off comes from doing exactly those things you find most difficult. Progress is paid for in the pains you take to overcome your weaknesses.
Do not suffer aimlessly. Know where to put your efforts. Do not waste energy on things that do not help your progress.
Recuperate strategically. Mind-numbing scrolling for hours is neither particularly enjoyable nor replenishing. Read a good book. Go for a walk. Visit a museum or the theatre. Have a talk with a good friend. Cook a good meal.
Work with your circumstances. Do not fight against something you cannot change. Make your environment work for you.
Do not waste time on planning or thinking about how to work. Just work. Reading books about productivity and learning might bring some benefit if you apply it, but you need to actually spend more time applying it than reading about it.
They will see.
