“Powerful the man that get more done dead than alive” (241).

“Her prayers are powerful… She gots a way with words. A gift. Soundin’ like she gone be a preacher one day” (224).

This is when Camae is talking about hearing MLK’s daughter, Bernice, praying that it won’t hurt him when he’s assassinated. Bernice King did, in fact, become a preacher. This shows how much research Hall put into the writing of this play, and how many little off hand comments could be overlooked, when they have historical value.

“Camae blows on the end of a cigarette. It lights up. King stands stunned… Camae: I know. Angel breath is some hot breath. King: You’re. An. Angel? Camae: In the flesh” (222).

“We have been drowned by hoses. Our dreams being washed away. We have been bitten by dogs. Our skin forever scarred by hatred at its height. Our godly crowns have been turned into ashtrays for white men at lunch counters all across the South.”

Throughout the play, MLK requests that a few different people acquire him Pall Mall cigarettes. This is one of the many ways that Hall makes Dr. King human. A little known fact about Dr. King was that he was, in fact, a smoker. This shows how in depth the research Hall did for this show was.
