Random thought of the day: If you had to pick one of the Galilean moons to be the oldest, who would you choose?
Asking for no reason in particular.
It's finally hereeeeee!
In the Eye of the Beholder
I had a ton of fun writing this and hope to write more over the next few weeks. Any feedback or encouragement would be appreciated!

One of my favorite facts about Earth compared to the other rocky planets is that it's the only one that has a magnetic field. Mars is too small and has cooled down to a solid core, while Venus is theorized to not have a solid core at all. Mercury does have a molten outer core and a solid inner core (which is really fascinating though I don't have time to get into it now) but it rotates too slow and is too close to the Sun for it to be anything more than trace.
And while I can't draw I think that fact would be really fun to incorporate into an Earth design.
Imagine: Earth with the typical blue-and-green hair and patched skin, but his eyes are a molten amber. They flicker like fire in the Sun's light, and are subtly different every time you look at them. When he's hit by a solar flare, they turn into a combination of red, green, and purple.
I LOVE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD MAN dude I was literally thinking about it at work today this is so magical. I was researching auroras on my brief 15 minute breaks I got to have and they're supposedly happening All the time!??!?? They're just not always visible to the naked eye?! My Earth design is already very bright because I wont let go of milking everything I can get out of his atmosphere like I'll never forget it when drawing him, but incorporating Earths auroras is just toooooo good of an opportunity to pass up. In my head I imagine they wouldn't be constant, but they'd be frequent, intermittent sheens of light that would start at the top of his head and fade off somewhere around his neck or something, in a sort of ripple/wave pattern. God the concept of them showing in his eyes too...
HIS MAGNETIC FIELD IS SO COOL. Another concept I feel like we should talk about more is that Earth is its ability to withstand solar flares, because it's entirely unique.
Here's the thing that Solarballs gets wrong about Earth: the Sun's solar flares can't hurt Earth. His magnetic field and atmosphere are too strong to let anything harm his life. The plot point in the Planet Revolution about the Sun being afraid to flare the Earth is incorrect - the Sun can't hurt Earth, and he's the only one amongst the Rockies who can protect himself. Even Venus, with his induced magnetosphere (born from his upper atmosphere) experiences significant atmospheric loss to coronal mass ejections.
This is something I'm planning to include in my AU, because it's so contradictory to Earth's typical "super fragile can't be touched" reputation. He is weak to asteroids, but unlike the other Rockies he's not weak to the Sun!
Something something the eyes are the only living tissue you see when looking at a human so when you look at a planet the eyes represent their interiors.
Earth has amber, molten eyes. Jupiter has extremely pale blue eyes (for all that liquid hydrogen). Neptune has shimmering silver eyes (for his highly pressurized rocky core).

Evolution AU is 3.5k words and we're barely touching the Ordovician period, I'm starting to think this might be a 3-4 shot instead of a oneshot like I originally planned. For the sake of the end notes at least, that's already shaping to be a beast ;-;
you guys can't even imagine my delight
All large planets in our Solar System have rings, and it has been suggested that Mars may have had a ring in the past. This raises the quest

i love solarbals. solarblls is so coool. guhys. so cool.
My 5k word one-shot has recently turned 30k words. Is this normal for pet one-shots? Is it sick? Should I take mine to the vet?
And why won't it naturally transition between this scene and the next? I'm poking it with a stick and everything
OP, this is a VERY common scam in the pet fic industry right now! Fic ideas are marketed as "teacup" one-shots, and unsuspecting writers take them home not being told that they're actually juveniles!
Most alleged one-shots that supposedly cap out at 5k words are only a couple weeks old or severely malnourished, and once they start receiving proper care and writing sessions, they'll blow up to 25k, 50k, or often even 100k or more. This is perfectly normal and the size they were always meant to be!
But sadly, many writers don't have space in their homes & lives for such a long fic, which is why it's a shame they're often presented as one-shots.
Unfortunately, the industry being what it is, sometimes it's safer to stick to drabbles until you're absolutely sure a fic idea you've had your eye on is fully grown.

“Goodbye, Derek Hutchins, we hardly knew you.”
In the Solarballs fandom I usually see the planets having weapons that correspond to their godly namesakes- Mars gets a spear, Neptune a Trident, etc.
Obviously this leaves Earth as the odd one out, since he's not directly named after a god. I've seen some fun interpretations, but the fact that no one has made Earth's default weapon the same as his Earthling's default weapon (A Gun) feels like quite the oversight.
Also seeing Earth with a machine gun compared to all the other planets' more traditional weapons would be REALLY funny.
Guys I am full of great displeasure as I inform you I will NOT be in the upcoming SolarBalls episode. I know you were looking forward to me having more screentime, but I just had to let you know in advance so you weren't disappointed...
Jokes on you, *I* got in!
My debut on the big screen!
I wanted to say thank you for the response to my first snippet of my Solarballs AU (which I've decided to call the Evolution AU) which ended up motivating me to write a lot more than I have recently! I thought I'd give another snippet of Earth (in the Cambrian period now) while I keep on working on it; I'm still a far ways from being done but I wanted to share this part.

Procrastinated for a whole month because it just didn't look good enough but whateverrrrr "( – ⌓ – )
Close-ups below (pls afmire the badges because they took FOREVER lmao)
alright @hellonearthtoday and @/atseptic, you convinced me haha. Here's a short preview and discussion on my "actual reasoning as to why the Solarballs crew values Life so much" AU (it probably needs a better name).
It's a little hard to explain, but it started with the concept that the celestials couldn't take human forms until the humans came along. Taking that idea to the extreme, celestials existed as primordial beings but hardly had the capability for anything (no emotions, no senses, hardly any thoughts) until Life started advancing and gaining those capabilities on Earth's surface. The fic is basically Earth very slowly gaining sentience alongside his Life and learning to experience the universe around him - then sharing that evolution with the rest of the solar system!
I'll probably share more snippets as I write (much to my chagrin, writing a fic that's very research-intensive when you're very busy is slow), but here's a clip from the beginning!
update I spent an hour researching trilobite eyes last night just to find out that the book I got for this fic described it two pages over. I'm quitting this what do you MEAN -
On a totally unrelated note did you know that trilobites had eyes made out of calcite that could simultaneously focus on the near and far range? Pretty sick.
