Valid point, and in the time period + culture based on Avatar, having a high pony like that is a sign of status and wealth, BUT shaving the hair surrounding the pony is a sign of dishonour. That’s why Iroh can have a high pony and the rest of his hair, but Zuko can’t. It’s why it’s a HUGE deal when they cut their high ponytails off in the river, it’s physically letting go of all that wealth, power, and status to become humble and an everyday man.

It was brobably a combination of both. they would have had to move fast in order to save him, and they most likely shaved enough off to take care of the wounds, and then after the infection was taken care of enough to know that he was not going to die they shaved the rest of it? If that makes sense?
