“If I die, I’m haunting you first.” Amami joked lazily, watching the ice cubes in his water clink against the glass. There was something cathartic about joking about stuff like that, in their situation - as though if he joked about getting killed enough, it wouldn't happen. "That's a promise."

“YOU don’t have to worry about that, amami-kun.” even in his uneasiness, saihara tried to force the tiniest of smiles. a joke - that’s what this was. a joke, and he should just go along with it. agree that a ghost haunting him in a killing game would be pretty scary, and leave it at that. the single eye visible under the brim of his hat shifted its gaze to amami’s drink and lay fixed on that spot, unable to look any higher. “because it’s not going to happen. we’ll... we’ll get out of here.”

“SO... you don’t need to make morbid jokes, okay?” if akamatsu wasn’t here, then saihara had to push her promises in her stead. even if he was trying to convince himself just as much as he was trying to convince amami. but... the idea of someone coming back as a ghost, as horrible as it was, still had some level of comfort to it. “ah, though... if you could float through walls, if you died... maybe that would be useful for exploring the rest of the school. i’ll hold you to that promise. in - in the hypothetical scenario.”

ISN’T it hypocritical of amami to ask something like that, when he’s also awake? that’s what saihara thinks, anyway, raising a hand to rub at eyes plagued by dark rings. there’s a moment where he considers ignoring amami entirely, or deflecting in an attempt to get him away. saihara doesn’t like company so much these days. at least, when there is company, it’s a choking sensation, ready to pounce on him for all the people he’d condemned to their deaths.

BUT amami’s question is innocuous.

“IF i could sleep, that’s what i would be doing.” but nightmares, but darkness, but the suffocating atmosphere of the room team danganronpa had given him. “why are you awake, amami-kun?” reading is too much of a bittersweet hobby, so he’s turned on a television in a room they’d been encouraged to use as a group space. it’s playing a drama that he doesn’t understand, but offers the comfort of white noise. “nightmares?”

they stood in front of an empty cabinet, which was usually filled with mugs and cups of all sorts. amami didn’t think all of the school’s cupware would just go missing with no thought behind it, which meant it had to be some sort of a prank. unless the entire student body had decided to borrow one, there had to be someone pulling at the strings.

he had stared at one student far too long than was necessary as they carried their beverage in a bowl. he guessed it was personal choice at first, until he saw other students doing the same thing.

amami just wanted his coffee for the morning.

THIS was... a strange kind of prank, definitely. not interesting. not good. just... strange. inconvenient. not as flashy as pranks usually are, and nobody had jumped out to claim the trickery behind this as their own, but...

“I... don’t think you need my help to pin this one on ouma-kun.” he didn’t want to think of this as a case for a detective to solve, but rather, a classmate that just needed his help. “but it bothers me that he hasn’t taken the responsibility for it. maybe he wants to be chased. that, or... it was an upperclassman.” there weren’t any with suspicious reputations... that he knew of. but it was too early to push the possibility entirely to the side.

“WE also have to think about where they are, instead of just who did it.” if this really was the work of ouma, then saihara really didn’t feel like deal with his antics. “if we can retrieve everything, then even without knowing the culprit, you won’t have to drink coffee out of a bowl.” a pause, and then a wince. “ah, i might just be overthinking it, though. have you seen anything? i can go searching.”

HORRID music playing over a horrid situation, saihara wonders if the countdown to monokuma killing them all for their defiance ticks as quickly as his heart. one, two, one, two, one, two - steady, unsteady, pulling at his breath, making him move just a little faster. he doesn’t know where akamatsu is, but his feet have carried him to the library, and he freezes at the sight he finds.

“AMAMI-KUN.” breathless, but not afraid, saihara does not allow himself to turn to fear. is this it, then? they hadn’t even used the trap, but here amami is, undoubtedly headed to the secret entrance they’d found. “what are you doing?” he doesn’t want to believe it - that amami, mysterious but kind, calm and levelheaded, could possibly be the mastermind? it’s the only explanation that his mind can scramble for, but he allows a pause. he wants an explanation.

HE needs an explanation. he doesn’t want to believe it. all that he wants is for amami to provide him with reasonable excuse to be here like this. then again... can he really let this go? a pause, then a bluff, “akamatsu-san’s coming, too, and then... if you don’t explain yourself, everyone else is going to know that you’re here.”

NOT often does rough play amuse saihara so, but a soft laugh bubbles in his chest at the gesture regardless. maybe because it’s amami, who’s always seemed so reliable and gentle. amami, who saihara believes has never acted out of malice towards him. it’s not like ouma, who would undoubtedly push to get a rise out of him, or momota, who he finds too rough and loud for his taste.

“IS this how you normally treat your classmates, amami-kun?” the tease to his tone is clear. “with such... hostility?” it’s an accusation that holds no weight to it - playing along seems to be the best option. there’s only a moment’s hesitation before he reaches out and playfully shoves amami right back, albeit with less force.

IT isn’t as though saihara is averse to harukawa’s presence, so much as she’s surprised that she’s here at all. to be honest, he doesn’t really... like her, all that much. anyone could agree that harukawa maki is intimidating, but saihara believes that she’s downright frightening, at times. he doesn’t like her emotionless stares. he doesn’t like her blunt words.

BUT he likes momota, and momota likes her, so saihara will hold on to momota’s belief and use it to steel himself - to keep himself from moving away from her, or otherwise making a wrong move.

“HARUKAWA-SAN?” he’s not going to push his luck by asking why she’s chosen to sit next to him. “i think... momota-kun is somewhere else on campus, if you’re looking for him.” that’s the only link they have, after all. he can’t imagine that this is for... anything else. “i’m just reading. i haven’t seen him.”

SAIHARA startles at the touch, flinching away before he can even parse who it is, thoughts dulled by the hiccups and shudders and his best attempts to stifle the disgusting noises he’s making, the most he can do is furiously wipe at his eyes until he can see who it is. who it is that’s found him when he’d retreated from class to be alone.

“I’M-” he starts, stumbling over the words he needs. “i’m sorry, i’m - i’m - i’m -” he stops stumbling and starts choking, breaths rattling in his chest. he can’t think.

ONLY after his vision clears enough does he pause, stiffening with horror. momota or akamatsu, he can take - even in the humiliation of being caught like this, he knows them well enough to understand that they’ll always pass him encouragement. someone else in his class, maybe. but a teacher? it’s a special kind of fear in realizing that a teacher was the one to find him like this.
