Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku was born on August 24, 1890 in Honolulu. Before he became a surfer, Duke was an Olympic swimmer responsible for winning 3 gold medals and two silver medals. He is credited with spreading the sport of surfing around the world. There is a yearly contest named after Duke called the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. Duke died on January 22, 1968 of a heart attack.
