Okay here’s the context. A fourth wall break is when the fictional acknowledges, interacts with or destroys the separation between itself and the real reality me and you are in. Most commonly this happens through a character, but you don’t have to use a character to break the fourth wall.
Why does this fit as a ship name for Hunter x Saint x ???/Enot/Inv(Inverted)? Simple, all three of these characters to some extent break the fourth wall.
Let’s start with ??? because they are the easiest to explain, in fact i don’t even think I need to explain it. The developers communicating with us through the region titles like “Nachos will never be the same after this” (I don’t exactly remember what it was called) and the “Good job gamer” (again, I don’t remember exactly what they said) are both very clearly examples of the story acknowledging us, the players. Because who else would they be talking to? It’s not like there is someone else who can read those region titles. And there isn’t anyone else they can be calling a gamer. ??? isn’t playing a game, this is their reality. But we are playing a game.
Hunter is the next easiest to explain. Most people know about the cycle limit, but I’ll explain it in a bit more depth, since there seems to be a common misconception. From cycle 20 to cycle 1 Hunter is normal. They eat like a carnivore, their stats are the same as the ones listed in the Rain World fan wiki, their weight works the same way the other slugcats weight works, etc. At and after cycle 0 however they start having seizures, their movement and strength decreases, the sustenance they get from food get progressively lower and death becomes permanent. But you don’t die after a certain point in time. Hunter can continue to live on to cycle -100, -200 and so on (I think this aspect of Hunter’s disease is severely under utilised by the fandom). After you die in this perma death period of time the campaign you played becomes inaccessible. But thats not the only way to make the campaign inaccessible to us. If you quit the game after Hunter has reached cycle 0 the game will become inaccessible. Hunter can’t quit the game, there’s nothing equivalent to quitting the game in universe. No, this is the Hunter campaign acknowledging your existence. This is a fourth wall break.
Saint is the last one and the hardest to explain. Ribicon has already been perceived as breaking the fourth wall. Saint not wanting to see an ending and just wanting to ascend the rest of the creatures in the world, but us wanting to continue on, to get an ending, to see more of the game despite Saint’s own wishes causes the geme to create this sick a twisted place to fulfill our desires. But I would like to go a bit deeper. When a slugcat ascends in an ending they are shown their geatest desires, for Survivor it’s their family, for Monk it’s Survior along with their family, for Hunter it NSH, for Artificer it’s their dead kids. The void seems to know or at least guess what a person’s desire is. Considering Rubicon is located were the Void normally is, is it not unreasonable to assume that the Void is making a guess of what is our, the player’s desire? To see more of this game? Thats all the Void has to go off of. And it’s not a bad guess. We have gotten to the end of the game now, haven’t we? Saint’s own connection to Void should not be understated. They both ascend thing. Could it be possible that Saint is just another trick of the Void? We want a new and interesting playable slugcat with unique mechanics. Here’s a green playable slugcat with along tongue that acts like a grapple worm, that can’t hurt anything and has cool ascension abilities. We want answers to what happened to Sliver of Straw. Here’s a slugcat with three dots on it forehead like the triple affirmative and that can ascende things. We don’t want the game to end, we want to forever be able to explore this game. Saint’s campaign is a cycle that never ends. Is Saint the Void, a thing that has nothing to do with what we want like playable slugcats or triple affirmatives and being able to forever explore and find new thing within the game, but is pretending to be. Idk, it cannon in my au. Anyway thats a fourth wall break bingo.
