I'm paralysed by this idea that I need to do something to help put out the fire that's plaguing the world. Making art and zines feels so meaningless in times like this. Like how can words on a page in a crappy little publication no one is gonna read help anything other than make me feel a little better for a few hours?

People always say art is important but they never say why. Is it more important than volunteering? Than protesting? Than standing in between a gun and a vulnerable person?

But then I read other peoples art. I read comics published online, stories published on BlueSky or Tumblr. I think about how their works impacts me. How it makes me feel stronger, more capable, more hopeful, more connected. It inspires me to keep going despite the horrors.

It inspires me to create art of my own.

And maybe, just maybe, my work impacts someone else in the same way. And maybe that's how we put out the fires. By making art, building connections, inspiring each other. One tiny piece of art at a time.

Art is how we tell our stories, our truths, in a way that history books won't. The world being on fire is exactly the time to be making art. To be making zines. To be making anything.
