It was no small feat to get out of the city, far enough away that light pollution gave way to the true dark of night. Her bike sat dormant near by, her helmet by her feet and a cold soda in her hands as she sat perched up on a nice boulder that was still warm from a long summer day.

And it was quiet.

It was never quiet, not really, not in the city. Her gaze stayed on the sky, thin wisps of grey clouds stretched like a veil across patches of stars. She saw it.

"Oh! Look!" Her free hand smacked their arm before she pointed up at the heavens above. "It's starting."

A star streaked across the sky, a bright flash of light that faded as quickly as it came.

Well this hadn't been how she wanted her day to go. After a too long shift at work that included getting doused in liquor when a box got dropped in the back all Piper had wanted to do was go home and take a shower.

She hadn't been allowed inside of her own apartment. The yellow tape on her whole floor had read biohazard and she really didn't want to know what that meant.

And so she found herself here at approximately too early in the morning, looking miserable and smelling like stale beer as the door opened.

"Thanks for letting me crash here."

The Bear Season 1 - Part 2

"Don't... don't say shit like that."

Sami was the first person she'd called. It had been instant, second nature. She'd been sobbing on the line, begging him to come get her. She felt kind of stupid about it, now.

Her bike was totaled. It wasn't even her fault this time, she doesn't know what happened, not really. Maybe the other driver was on something, maybe a netrunner had started trouble for some reason. It didn't matter. Either way she'd been hit. Hard.

Her helmet looked like it had been held up against a stone grinder for fun. Clothes torn all the way down to and past the lining of armored mesh between the layers, it was pure luck and a lot of adrenaline that had led her walk away at all yet alone with minor wounds.

She was holding his hand, fingers shaking even now.

"... You're all I got too. Thanks, um," she had to pause to breathe before she started crying again, "thanks for showing up. I needed you. I need you."

"I hate fucking with them," Doyle confesses, ducking into the passenger side. He doesn't buckle in, evidently trusting Piper to not get him killed with her driving. That, or kill him fast enough he doesn't feel it- either way! Radio Vexelstrom is buzzing quietly in the background. He leaves that be. Something to fill the quiet feels right, like a safety blanket.

The briefcase is held on his lap like a beloved pet, both of his hands resting on top of it like he's prepared to shelter it with his entire body if he has to.

"I've gotta be honest- my boss doesn't know I'm involved in this." He's got a husband to get home to. He doesn't particularly like Mox. But Josh? Josh vouches for Piper. That will have to be enough.

There's a Delamain involved in a nasty wreck not too far away, but it provides perfect cover from the police for a moment.

"Let's keep it that way then, yeah?" Usually her smiles are dangerous or charming, occasionally they're sardonic, but the one she gives Doyle is an attempt at comfort for once.

"I get it,'' her eyes are back on the road, moving with the flow of traffic around the wreckage. She doesn't bother to look, she's been in enough accidents to know what kind of carnage is there. "I didn't exactly sign up to be part of this either but, you know, you do what you gotta do sometimes."

Part of her wants to say for the greater good but it just sounds hollow. Another lane shift as Piper tucks herself among another similar looking car, not identical but enough to make it harder to pick them out so clearly.

"This the kind of work you usually do?" Worth asking if only to do what she does best: bond with people.

The Bear Season 1 - Part 2

Misty didn't ask for things often, so when she did Piper was always quick to say yes, sometimes even before she got all the deets. This is exactly how she got roped into moving too-heavy merchandise that got delivered a block away from where it was supposed to be. It was a bitch to do, she nearly busted it when a crack in the cement caught the toe of her boot, and the promise of rain was starting to pay out before it was done.

But it was Misty. And she liked helping Misty.

She sat in the little store, the scent of incense lingering in the air and catching on her clothes. She looked up when Misty approached, smiled when she accepted the little bracelet that she was offered. Tiny round stones smiled back at her.

"What, these for good-vibes or something?" She didn't really get this whole new-age spiritualism thing, but it didn't stop her from slipping the bracelet on her wrist all the same.

"WELL, WHEN YOU KEEP LIVING LIFE..." Ben trails off for a moment to finish off his drink, reaching up to loosen his tie a little, "-- you're bound to hear a few repeats here and there." An easy smile on his lips as he nods towards the card held onto her hand.

"I imagine someone like you has got a collection of business cards from all sorts of suits. You can add me to the pile, but I can deliver." It is said without any kind of bravado, a simple statement of fact. His name held its own in this city.

"I know they probably comp your drinks for you, but do you want another? Or something to eat? I might grab another drink, but I'll probably head home after." He glances over at the bartender, getting his attention with a simple nod, "Another one for me, John, and whatever the lady wants."

His literal loosening up was certainly not lost on her. She could just let this go, leave it as a moment in time and nothing more. But, well, he'd been good company so far - different company than what she was used to. And that was the joy wasn't it? The spice of life came from strangers, people different than yourself.

And maybe she just didn't want to go back to her shitty apartment just yet, didn't want to roll the dice and see if she'd have hot water when she went to wash her makeup off. She didn't belong here, didn't belong in places like this, but it was fun to pretend.

"Whisky sour, two cherries. Thanks." Her smile was flashed to the bartender before she tapped-tapped-tapped the edge of the card upon her cheek. Finally she slipped it into the pocket of her borrowed suit jacket. "See, now I'm just wondering if you've been taught to not let someone take you to a second location, or if I can talk you into buying me a little late night snack elsewhere. I'm not exactly feeling foie gras and the like, but I do know a pretty sweet spot to get ice cream near by."

"..." what a mood killer.

"Uh, ask this thing to go to the Glen," Orange usually drag out their hangouts after she's dropped off at her place. He seems like he's distracted by something and that he's got an idea of something to break the tension. "Like...do you talk to the guy or do it in the phone...or..."

What a weird way to ask her to come to his place. He's right, he doesn't know how to talk to people at all. Nor does he like talking to the cab, or the AI inside the cab.

"I'll uh, show you some stuff. I don't throw away his stuff...uh, you know how to rip footage right? "Cause it's gonna be riddled with disc rot and I don't really want to learn how to do anything I can make you do instead.."

She snorts. It helps clear up some of the rancid air in the car when that snort turns into a laugh, her head lulling against the cool glass of the tinted window.

"Yeah I fuckin'- I got this. Hey, Del?"

"Yes Miss Piper?" Comes the mildly chipper automated voice. "How can I help you?"

"We're gonna head for The Glen instead."

"Understood."

The car jerks, cutting across two lanes of traffic going their way, one going the other, and to a sound of angry and confused horns does successfully shoot a U.

"Jesus." Piper mumbles. "What was...? Oh, uh, yeah I've got you. I'm not, like, a runner or editor but I can handle basic footage stuff. BD's freak me out, did I ever tell you that?"

Her sentence had been a tease. Not everyone saw the promise of violence as a form of flirtation but, well, these two were built different. Or, if nothing else, they were similarly broken.

She's still leaning up against the wall, lit by the vending machine they've stopped by. The orange Nicola in her hand is a perfect prop, letting her act nonchalant as she takes a pull and looks up at him through her lashes.

"I dunno, but I do know I took down an Animal at my last boxing gig so..." her shoulders shrug in faux nonchalance, "you know, I could probably get you on your back if you really pushed my buttons."

She has no doubt that he's got more chrome, better chrome too. But if chrome was the only deciding factor she'd be dead ten times over by now.
