hi! so i wanted to see if ais naming us sparrow was symbolic or not, so i did some research into japanese culture surrounding sparrows (since iām pretty sure thatās where ais originates? we assume he is an oni, and they derive from japan)
so in japanese culture, sparrows are often associated with perseverance, resilience and adaptability because they can thrive in many climates and overcome different challenges.
mc does do that in every origin- oracle mc escaped the cult they were worshipped in, exile mc lived without civilisation for the majority of their life and alchemist mc fled a mage who saw them as a test subject and presumably experimented on them.
sparrows are also seen as messengers of joy and happiness, bringing good fortune to those who encounter them
this iām not sure applies to ts mc. if we go down the LIās routes successfully and save them, then it may apply, but the other four LIās who we do not chase never find the answer to their problems- and in the worst case scenario, die.
if we think about this from aisā point of view, then it may make sense why he named us sparrow. sparrows are associated with the arrival of spring and hope for the future, their cheerful presence believed to bring harmony to people's lives and bring community.
ais is LONELY. he wants community, people around him free of the sea springs grasp. conscious people who can form their own opinions.
in a way it is him hoping we stick around, as our first day in eridea already reunites the five main LIās for the first time in who knows how long.
my last point is that having sparrows nest near your home (or garden) is considered auspicious. they are believed to protect against negative energies and bring you blessings from above.
iāve seen some theories on here that say our touch can minimise the hold ocudeus has on ais for a short time, and i think it makes sense.

Vere FORCES MC into showing him wtf is up with them and is also forced by Basilea into showing himself in a state of vulnerability immediately after, meanwhile Leander's is something he wanted to avoid anyone else seeing and he makes a point of trying to gloss over it bc Mhin saw and he CAN'T have that"

"On the one hand I absolutely anticipate he has some kind of plans re: the curse that are fucked up. However I also do think that his little spiel about "devotion" and "loyalty" in his route was sincere (maybe the most genuine thing he's said to MC actually), same with his professed hesitation about branding MC. It really is something he values and he's desperate to ensure people around him are loyal even through horrific methods. He strikes me as a guy who's been manipulating (even if for "good" reasons š š ) people for so long, he's honestly just forgotten how to not put on a performance for literally the entire world at all times forever.
And the fact MC -- especially after telling him at breakfast to either get on with telling them wtf he (didn't) find or they'll stop wasting his and their time and leave -- CAN walk away, unlike everyone else in Lowtown, is something that gets to him. Because if they DO choose to stay, it's different than the Adders or civilians of Lowtown who rely on him for everything, to the point of being willing to BE FUCKING BRANDED. It's a choice they're making and the entire appeal of it is that they have no history with him or the Senobium or Lowtown or Hightown or ANYTHING in Eridia.
Best way I can put it is that he craves a genuine connection with another person who will treat him as another person, not an idol. But at this point, regardless of whether he was always like this, he NEEDS the security and consistency of being The Perfect Good Guy in Control of Everything Capable of Saving Everyone, even if it's fucking exhausting. He views pretty much every relationship in his life as a matter of a literal leash he or the other person holds, and he NEEDS to be the one holding it. Hence the brands. But with MC, they're not on a leash. He wants that sincere connection, but also wants them to heel -- ideally WITHOUT a leash around their neck.

And also the worst possible ending (TACKING ON TO WHAT YOU SAID [USERNAME REDACTED FOR PRIVACY]) resulting in his and/or MC's destruction via, as Vivienne of Dragon Age Inquisition once said, "A leash can be pulled from either end, darling."
"At present I kind of see the best possible ending for Leander's route ultimately culminating in him letting go of the "leashes" he's had an iron grip on for years, and finally granting the people around him some degree of faith that they won't discard him (I think I recall him saying something like "faith has nothing to do with it" re: devotion)

"I like how Kuras is accepting of MC's curse yet also doesn't in any way dismiss MC's desire to be rid of it, since... Hm. How do I put this? It feels like some of the LIs are using MC (Leander and Vere), some are just Also Fighting For Their Fucking Lives like MC (Mhin and Ais), meanwhile Kuras... It's almost like he's just grateful to be seen that once by them and, while still afraid of him in the moment because Holy Fuck, still willing and ready to trust him. Not that no one else trusts him (LITERALLY EVERYONE), but because he hasn't been able to reveal that part of himself with anyone
Also. Again. The contrast between Leander removing MC's bandages (everything makes me think of--) vs Kuras carefully and reverently rebandaging their hands. Leander DEMANDS vulnerability while offering -- at best -- only scraps in return. Meanwhile Kuras from the beginning lays out the rules and only asks that MC respect them. Kuras asks -- ASKS -- that trust be rewarded with trust, and gives MC the benefit of choosing whether to move forward or not. Leander is, sometimes subtly, sometimes not, ORDERING MC to offer trust while offering none (or a ??? amount in return that we just don't understand fully yet) in return"
"Mhin's route makes sense to me, since it's both MC and them relying on being able to find something within the Senobium. Which has the most reasonable chance of having an answer. Same with Leander since. Man there's gotta be something that happens between the Adderstones and the Senobium there, there's way too much vitriol for there to not. Vere, maybe the same, maybe something completely out of left field (honestly seems the most likely to have a happy ending w/ curse to me, at least atm).
