“You haven’t cut your hair in a while,” Hop commented, mindlessly reaching a finger out to prod at one of the curls resting on Blake’s shoulder. The young champion continued tapping away at their phone, unbothered by the action.

“Yeah, I decided to grow it out,” they reply, reaching back to run a hand through the messy waves falling down their nape.

Hop snorts, leaning back on the steel bench. “Didn’t you always complain about it being a pain in the arse to maintain when it gets long?”

Blake shrugs as they straighten up a little, their oddly avoidant gaze betraying their otherwise nonchalant demeanor. “Yeah, I uh… I dunno, the medium-length just wasn’t doing it for me anymore. One of my, uh, stylists suggested I wear it in a ponytail…? So, uh, figured I might try that…”

Their attention flits back to their screen. “I can’t always chop it all off again if I end up hating it, no big deal.”

Hop sits with his elbow propped against his leg and his cheek resting in his hand, staring at his friend with a trace of… uncertainty? He couldn’t place what wasn’t sitting right with him about that response.

His eyes wander over to the tattered old poster of Leon still plastered up in the stadium locker room. Hair cascading in an arch shape behind him as he struck that silly signature pose... Flicking back to Blake, he sits for a moment with the mental image of their hair with the same flowing length.

…Pssht, yeah, didn’t suit them.

Blake stares into the mirror unblinkingly as the final clump of hair drops from the newly buzzed lower half of their head.

“All done, Mx. Lockehart,” the barber declares with a halfhearted smile, glancing between them and the reflection. “Got you all cleaned up. I know it’s a big change from what you had before, but it’s the best I could do for that burned off section. You look great!”

They reach up to ghost their fingers over the brown fuzz. She was right. An undercut wasn’t terrible on them. It was… different. Better than just leaving it long with a whole chunk of it singed off.

“…Thanks,” the word comes out quieter and less enthused than they’d intended. Their eyes fall to the clumps and snipped strands scattering the black cloak draped over them and the ground around their chair.

Their mind flashes back to narrowly dodging the Flamethrower that bastard’s Pyroar flung at them, the heat that caught in their untied hair and licked at the back of their neck.

Tch. After all that time I spent growing it out, too… As if that was even close to the worst thing they had to resent Lysandre for.
