And then Loki decided to fake his death, likely to avoid his cell yes, and to ‘one up’ Odin/Thor by acquiring Asgard’s throne… But also he likely faked his death because of Thanos. Loki is always doing things for multiple reasons, and one of them is always survival/self-preservation.

And then, just when he thought he was getting back on track, rebuilding his relationship with Thor, helping save the Asgardians from Hela/Surtur…

Thanos comes.

Loki knows he’s not making it out alive… So he makes it count. He makes it mean something.

He does it on his own terms. One last moment of agency in a life where he felt he had very little. He refused to keep being someone else’s pawn.

That dagger was never meant to maim Thanos.

In the TDW comic prelude it's implied that Loki was shrouded from Heimdall's sight the entire time he was with Thanos. Heimdall is only able to find him once he's already on Earth with the Tesseract. Frigga was the only one who saw him in the Void, and even then, she only caught glimpses of it.

But we know that what she wasn't enough anyways. Frigga still believes that Loki himself is the one planning something with the Tesseract, not Thanos / The Other. And Thor jumps to the conclusion that Loki is doing it all solely for vengeance.

All this time, all those years, everyone believed that Loki acted for his own gain and never once thought someone else might have been influencing him.

Thor suspected once ("Who controls the would-be King?") but didn't really investigate any further.

And Loki never really took the time to tell anyone either. Maybe he just didn't bother because he didn't think they would believe him anyway.

Or maybe he was trying to save them from having to face Thanos too. Maybe he didn't want anyone else to go looking for Thanos foolishly believing they could defeat him.
