Prescribed burn at Bean Shoals Access tomorrow (3/12/21)
State Park staff will be conducting a prescribed burn between 11am and 5pm on 3/12 to benefit Oak, Hickory, and Shortleaf pine forest habitat. The Bean Shoals Access will be closed during the burn. Â

Around 7 acres of grass fields will be burned tomorrow (12/2/20) between 1pm and 2pm to maintain habitat for grassland wildlife and native plantsÂ

Native grass burns today, 9/19/19
We will be burning some small areas of native grasses today at various areas of the park. This will not effect any trails or facility closures. Burning stands of grasses in late summer / early fall encourages growth of new wildflowers and removes competing saplings and Woody shrubs.
Prescribed Burn on 9/3 (Tuesday) at the Bean Shoals Access (along Yadkin River)
There will be a prescribed burn to restore Oak Hickory Forest on park land along the Yadkin River on Tuesday. Expect to see smoke from noon until sunset. Some smoldering may remain until rain. This burn will close the Horne Creek Trail and the Bean Shoals Canal Trail, and entrance road for the duration of the burn. This closure does not effect other parts of the park or Horne Creek Farm State Historic Site. The approximate burn footprint is attached in yellow:

Prescribed burn on Pilot Mountain tomorrow 4/3
45 acres adjacent to the park office will be burned tomorrow between 12 and 3pm. Around .5 miles of the mountain trail will be closed starting at the park office during the burn
2019 park prescribed burns between now and late May:
A few small prescribed burns will be conducted at the mountain on Friday March 29 to reduce fuels around the new Visitor center site and campground. This burn will be conducted between 12pm and 3pm. The first .5 mile of the mountain trail will be closed briefly at the start of the burn. No other facilities will be closed.
Remaining Prescribed Burns for 2019 Following the successful cooperative burn with the NC Forest Service, a 130 acre area below the Little Pinnacle leading down to the new Visitor Center site will be burned to secure this side of the mountain against future wildfire escapes and improve wildlife habitat. The burn will take place this spring or early summer. This will conclude all large prescribed burns for the mountain for approximately 5 year period
2019 Planned prescribed burn
Pilot Mountain State Park is planning a reburn of most of the 2012 fire footprint either next week (week of 12/17) or early 2019. This will be a cooperative burn with the NC State Forest Service. A helicopter and forestry equipment such as a bulldozer and fire engines will be on site throughout the burn. Residents within a 1 mile radius of the mountain will be notified of via reverse 911 as soon as is practical before the burn. This burn will keep woody fuel levels low and restore the open conditions needed by oaks, hickories, pines and wildlife. This burn will also improve the nutritional quality of next years forage for wildlife ( releasing nutrients needed by plants like blueberries, huckleberries). The burn will be complete in one day but there will be smoldering visible until rain. The burn will be contained between cleared dozer lines, or areas that have already been burned in preparation for holding this burn within the lines (known as blackline, these recently burned woods don’t burn again until after another leaf fall event)

Fall Prescribed Fires at Pilot Mountain State Park
Pilot Mountain State Park will be burning several native warm season grassland and wildflower areas at various areas of the park throughout October and November. Prescribed fire reduces the amount of “thatch” or grass buildup, releases nutrients plants need to thrive and prepares the seedbed. We will also be reintroducing Federally Endangered Schweinitz’s Sunflower back into these prescribe burn areas. Schweinitz’s Sunflower is a unique tuberous sunflower that is only found from Surry and Stokes County south to the area around Charlotte, NC. Once part of the historical “Grand Savanna” that was the Virginia, North and South Carolina Piedmont, when scattered woodlands and open grassy fields were common and maintained by lightning, native american burning, and large grazing animals like Elk, Schweinitz’s Sunflower grew to 10 feet tall and thrived in a landscape of fire. We are being assisted in this effort by the Horticulture Department at Surry Community College. Seeds are being collected from a struggling wild population of Schweinitz’s Sunflower and grown to maturity in the Community Colleges Greenhouse, where they will be returned to the park for reintroduction.  Schweinitz’s Sunflower is endangered due to fire suppression, and habitat conversion such as the succession of early young forests to shaded closed canopy forests, the planting of invasive cool season grasses like tall fescue, intensive mowing, and other “clean farming techniques”. These activities have resulted in loss of habitat for small grassland animals like cottontail rabbits and bobwhite quail have also led to the slow demise of Schweinitz’s Sunflower. You can help in this effort to letting Piedmont grassland species to rebound by allowing field edges and hedgerows to grow brushy to preserve food and cover for wildlife , and limiting mowing of areas that aren’t actively being farmed to late winter. This unique part of Surry County’s natural heritage was named after a famed Moravian missionary and mycologist, Lewis David von Schweinitz, who is credited among other things, with discovering lower cascade falls at Hanging Rock State Park.
