Short Spine Stretch
Practice Makes Hard
The most common thing a Pilates teacher hears is – Wow! Is that ever hard!
My comment back every time:   Good! If it is easy, you are doing it wrong.
It’s true. I would love to tell you it gets easier but it just doesn’t. Ever.   Every day, every hour. hard. and it gets harder
A consistent practicing client (2x per week) said to me this week: “That is so hard!”
After gracefully executing 6 repetitions of Thigh stretch on the Pilates Reformer with extension – basically a giant back bend.
I reminded her that 8 months ago. She was so locked in her thoracic spine with rounded slouched shoulders that any kind of extension was nearly impossible. She could not even stand up straight if she tried.
She has been on an journey of evolution from slouched over shoulders and hanging off her bones into walking with an open chest and tall spine. Remarkable posture makeover.
I also reminded her that every time she came to Pilates she said it was hard.   Real lasting change takes work. Hard work. Consistently.
Hard to focus, hard to go deep and stay there, and hard to commit.
But it’s way way worth it.
There is always room for refinement and improvement. As we refine even the smallest of movements we go deeper onto the movement, and that is harder than hard.
What does success feel like when you finally get “there?”
It still feels hard. Get used to it.

My 3 Favorite Pilates Quotes
“Patience and persistence are vital qualities and the ultimate successful come from accomplishment of any worthwhile endeavor”
As a teacher I repeat this daily. Like every day, to every client. Patience. Take your time. No rush… It took a long time for your body to get to where is is. It will take patience and consistency to get to where you want to go.
“I must be right never an aspirin never injured a day in my life the whole country the whole world should be doing my exercises they be happier”
He was not modest. But he was right. Pro activity is key. Don’t wait until you are injured to pay attention to your body.
The Pilates method: ”My work is 50 years ahead of its time”
Joe said this in 1965. That puts us at 2015. Like now. Right now. Perfect time to head to class.
