Al Hirschfeld: The Master of Caricature

There are caricaturists... and then there is Al Hirschfeld.

Known as "The Line King," Hirschfeld spent more than eight decades creating elegant black-and-white ink drawings that captured the personality, movement, and spirit of Broadway stars, Hollywood celebrities, and cultural icons.

His work was never just about physical likeness. With remarkable economy of line, he distilled an entire performance into a few graceful strokes. It's no surprise that generations of illustrators admired his work, including Disney animator Eric Goldberg, who cited Hirschfeld as a major inspiration for the Genie in Aladdin.

Before Norman Rockwell became a household name, J.C. Leyendecker was America's premier illustrator. His distinctive brushwork, sophisticated compositions, and iconic Arrow Collar Man helped define the visual culture of early twentieth-century America.

Narcissus (2026)

Narcissus is an original sculptural form that I conceived and designed, presented here as a photorealistic digital rendering of a bronze maquette.

Inspired in part by the sculptures of Brancusi, my intention was to create a figure leaning forward as if peering into still water, recalling the Greek myth of Narcissus.
