Banawe: her name reminds me of whispering winds dancing through mountains, trees and bodies of water–exhilarating and inspiring. We’ve been following each other on tumblr since I began my journey into self-portraits and I’ve loved her work ever since. It’s always been a dream of mine to be seen through her perspective. There’s a striking gentleness in her photographs that words cannot describe, but in their softness they resonate such enigmatic energy. Her images allure like waves caressing the shore, full of secrets that leave you longing for more. There’s a depth in her art that I find myself drawn to–perhaps, a reflection of her love for nature: flowing, ever-changing and infinitely mysterious. Everything she creates is touched by her understanding of subtle yet powerful feminine beauty. She’s a poetic observer of the universe, unfolding hidden glimpses of truth in seemingly mundane places: silhouettes, landscapes and faces. She finds fleeting moments–whether melancholic or exuberant–and preserves them with grace, showing how life’s imprints are greatly defined by how we choose to perceive what’s in front of us. Along with her photography, I’ve always admired her way with words. Going through her archives, I found this gem: “Photographs are narratives - some of which are understood collectively while others are profound enough in their singularity. Although we’re islands apart, I’m grateful I have these photos as a reminder of that fun afternoon. I have nothing but love and respect for her.
