there’s a little speaker in his shop that plays quietly overhead. louder than that, hal sings offkey and exuberantly as he works. does he love abba ?? absolutely. can he sing abba ?? not fucking well. but he’s having a good time, and that’s what matters. there was a fresh delivery today, so the walls are bursting with fragrant color, and hal’s so excited that there’s color high on his cheeks too. “ if you want to take a few, you can. i can’t possibly use all of these – ” he could, but he’s feeling generous. if someone wants to take their own bouquet out the door, he won’t complain today. maybe tomorrow when he’s given away half his inventory.

josie takes a look around the store. it was a special occasion: a close friend’s birhday. as she entered the store, the sound of someone singing immediately overloaded her ears. out of habit, her mouth curled in annoyance, though once she saw that it was the voice of who she presumed to be the owner, she immediately changed her expression. no use going into an argument with someone whose goods she needed. after he gestured to all the flora around them, josie blinked. “take? don’t you mean buy?”

“sounds homely.” she remarked, feeling a twinge of jealousy. josie was an only child, and her concept of family was nothing more than a fantasy. her parents were okay, but she always felt so distant from both of them, despite the onslaught of material gifts. “something simple, please. maybe something with grains.” she nodded. “i get it. if only they had some more..interesting incentives then maybe there would be more of us wanting to return, but no.”
