The discovery of gravitational waves signals a new era in science. The scientific method is based on and limited by human perception and reasoning. Historically, breakthroughs in the hard sciences are enabled when people find ways to enhance their ability to perceive the universe through tools based on new technologies (microscopes, telescopes, particle accelerators, etc.). The resulting observations are the basisĀ for theoretical models that allow scientists to make sense of them to various degrees. When they reach the limit of what they can perceive and understand, they collaborate to create placeholders like ādarkā matter and energy. The discovery of gravitational waves will spawn technologies that allow scientists to perceive the universe in a new way (i.e. gravitational-wave astronomy). While this is a breakthrough in the hard sciences, thousands of scientists collaborated to learn how to discover gravitational waves through soft, social processes (best explained by a social scientist named Harry Collins). This soft side of science will also be what ultimately enables humanity to make sense of gravitational waves and use them to understand the universe better.

Harrison Ford did carpentryĀ for Sergio Mendes' recording studio in 1970.
Babies are born blackout drunk and slowly sober as they age. They form no permanent memories for several years, have no hand-eye coordination, and are either crying or sleeping. Slowly they regain the ability to crawl around on all fours, then to stumble drunkenly across the room before falling on their faces. Eventually, they become sober enough to start speaking slurred, broken sentences. But their emotions are still totally out of control, and they'll fly into a rage, a sobbing fit, or uncontrollable giggles at the slightest provocation. Puberty is the hangover.
