The color of the various planes as they interact and overlap allows for a much better understanding of the layers and also the positive and negative forms. Although various forms overlap, they can be taken as a whole and provide an interesting union in the larger sense of the image.

Gustav Dore’s Celestial Rose is filled with both organic and irregular forms. The organic forms are present from the figure area and into the ground as well. The most prominent irregular shape is the focal point of the image which seems to be both the figure and ground. The ways in which form overlap and intersect are too numerous to count in the coalescing of angels into a larger, irregular form, a union itself.

This image is totally representational in nature and made up of many irregular and organic forms that interact with each other in various ways. There is overlapping of planes, subtraction, touching and union showed throughout the image. Positive and negative forms are used with the figure ground element which further helps portray the “characters” being in front of the other planes present. The use of line as a detail element is employed within the forms of the body, giving them a union swell as a sense of depth, which is interesting. Color also unifies the sense of volume by tying the negative forms color with changing hues in the foreground figures.

The plane that is the symbols or words, along with the logo, are rectilinear in nature. The shadows of the hearts, are organic in nature as well.

The painting Guernica employs many different variations in elements of design. As far as visual elements go, nearly every plane is visible as form.  Surveying the image there are; Geometric, Organic, Rectilinear, Irregular, and Hand-drawn planes as form pictured above. There are also hand drawn lines apparent and many of these elements overlap, penetrate, and subtract each other in various ways. The black and white nature of the piece uses the positive and negative relationship to great effect, throwing the brain into chaos as it tries to discern what is and what isn’t occupied space.
