During a 3.5 month trip living in a van, we met up with the one and only MDK in Vancouver Canada. He gave us a few of his CDs for the road, and we headed south in Washington and Oregon. There was this magical moment when this song came on just as we were pulling up to Cannon Beach at sunset. This incredible view paired with this song will be forever engrained in my memory. The next day I decided to add some drum parts to the song in front of the same view. Here's a song I wrote called "Justice". We were on Vancouver Island and saw these ginormous 800 year old cedar trees and decided to record this there :) Lyrics: Justice. I've been trying to get it. To make this one, we hiked 14km and came WAY closer than we wanted to a bear...with cubs...twice...see the behind the scenes after the song :) This song started with just the drums which I improvised on location at Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba Canada and recorded live as seen. Then I added all of the other instruments afterwards. I wanted to capture the cool feeling of the location, and the difficult task of getting there, through the song. The first time we saw the bear was on the way there. We cam around a corner and Jess was suddenly within 10 feet of it. It was as startled as we were and it ran about 20 feet away from us onto the trail. It watched us for about 30 seconds and then when we started making lots of noise it left. We saw it on our way out of the forest afterwards and saw that it had a cub (which was up a tree). Fortunately the second time it was much further away and we were making lots of noise. Here's a tune I wrote/recorded at Matlock Beach on Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba Canada. I love this style of music. It makes me feel like I'm about to voyage the high seas. Watch till the end for Behind The Scenes! Drums and main guitar recorded live as seen :) I recorded additional guitars in our van in a WalMart parking lot, and pianos in a Starbucks :P. One of my goals with this series of videos is to keep the music simple and not overthink it. I tend to take a long time perfecting (and never feeling like it is) before I release songs (not that it's a bad thing). But here I'm challenging myself to be minimalistic with everything and see what I can do. Living in a van definitely makes it easy to be minimal since recording additional guitar parts in a hot parking lot is challenging :P The mini guitar I am playing is one of my favourite new instruments. It's a Yamaha Guitelele and it's got amazing tone for a guitar you can fit in a backpack.
