POTO Christmas Calendar 2020: December 6
The Christmas ornaments edition: The Metâs ââLittle Dancerâ by Degasâ
John Cudia!
You can't compare Leroux's characterizations to Kay's. Especially when the person you're talking to thinks that 'Phantom' is the original novel. *palmface* *dead*
That magical moment when you have Sandra Joseph tagging you in a video on FB and Ron Bohmer commenting on it...
Iâve leveled up in life.Â

"You, a sailor!"
âAnd fuck you too, Raoul.â
âAnd donât think I forgot about you, Dave.â
I think one of the reasons I love The Phantom of the Opera so much (letâs specifically point this at Leroux and ALW), is that it fulfills the Gothic ideal of âpure innocent young woman meets and is influenced by dark, mysterious stranger,â but SHE IS NOT RUINED BY HIM. itâs so incredibly important to me, because Christine emerges intact. Christine is the strength and compassion and heart of the whole thing, dressed up like the fragile ingenue. the fear and manipulation she endures does not warp her heart or undermine her resolution. most of the time, those arcs consume the heroine in some way, but not Christine. she may shed some of her innocence, but she serves as the salvation of the story through her forgiveness and her sympathetic heart, and itâs so valuable that she exists.
(I hope you donât mind me adding to this!)
YES I agree with the above!
ALSO: Unlike many other Gothic tales, itâs not your usual âpurity vs corruption, good vs evil etcâ trope (as in Dracula). Christine, in all her goodness, does contrast Erikâs darkness and insanity, but she doesnât save the day by rejecting or overpowering him in the traditional sense, but by showing him kindness, by offering to stay with him. Thatâs the absolute beauty of this character, that she is able to feel compassion even for the one who least deserves it (because while I pity Erik, he was beyond forgiveness at the point tbh).
This could so easily have been a story in which Christine whimpers and cries, Erik is a boring Gothic-villain stereotype and Raoul saves the day, but what it is is just so much better.
God I love this book.
Ice gets bloodstains out. Intended as a period PSA but I don't know your life.
I was at an antique store today and they had this mug that looks like ALW.
Nearly two years later, and IT IS STILL THERE
I want it.Â
Then I can fill that head of his with something more worthwhile than the shit he spouts out. t00t t00t!
Also, I wish he was wearing a hat...

I also finally found a decent resolution, colour image of this painting: Christina Nilsson as Ophelia, 1873, by Alexandre Cabanelâthe same artist who also painted the more well-known portrait of her as Pandora!
Christina Nilsson as Ophelia, c. 1868
How do you think Leroux Erik would react if Christine had given him an ALW style kiss?
He would have died. Literally. Just up and died right there. Either that or spontaneously combusted.
And there would be loud, inelegant sobbing involved. Probably while laying prostrate on the floor.
Leroux Erik is the biggest drama queen, I swear.
Leroux Erik: *appears in a cloud of smoke* WHAT in the name of God Almighty *drops chandelier* and the nine circles of HELL *throws around coffins* did you just *empties ten bottles of tokay wine* DARE TO CALL ME? *sobs and rolls around on the ground*. I SHALL NOT HAVE IT. YOU GREAT BOOBY! *laughs maniacally while still sobbing and disappears through a trap door*
In which @elfinmirror completely and accurately captures Leroux!Erik. :P
Kids meet The Phantom, Universal Studios, c. 1960s.
WHY IS THIS NOT A THING?
Ooh, Chaney-inspired âpère Trompe-la-Mortâ Erik! Love it!
This was the Phantom at Disneyland. ...I work with the characters and I am still trying to find information/the costume for this.Â

State wildlife officials have captured and euthanized two food-conditioned black bears west of Kalispell, but they say someone else continues to feed the bruins, making it difficult for them to catch a bear suspected of attacking and injuring an elderly woman in her house.
And this is WHY WE DONâT FEED WILD MAMMALS. Bears, deer, raccoonsâthese are all WILD animals and meant to STAY wild. Yes, itâs nice to get to see them when they show up in your rural yard, but you are manipulating the situation when you feed them for the sole purpose of getting to see them more often.Â
Wildlife are not there for your entertainment. When you live in a wildlife-prone area, you are invading their territory, and the fact that you see them at all is proof of that. When you habituate them to your presence by feeding them (to include feeding them things that may not be good for them), it only goes badly for the animals, even if you donât get attacked. Theyâre more likely to get hit by cars, attacked by dogs or otherwise come to a bad end, and by feeding them youâre making them dependent on you, especially if you encourage them to overpopulate.
And itâs not just bears. Did you know deer are dangerous? Yup. Even ones without antlers still have nasty sharp hooves and they can deliver a damaging, even fatal, kick. Raccoons carry diseases like rabies and will bite if they feel threatened by humans or pets, and many wild mammals have a tendency to make a nuisance of themselves in garbage. âBambiâ is fiction; the reality is that even supposedly cute, harmless animals can be a threat.
Anyone who is feeding wild mammalsâand I include you on this, pagans who are leaving food offerings outside for wildlife to eatâyou are harming the animals you claim to love. STOP IT.
(As to birds? The Audubon Society says bird feeders are okay as long as you maintain cleanliness. However, do NOT feed waterfowl.)
